Fernández, upon finishing his professional engineering studies in France, returned to the Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón, Puerto Rico and developed a formula for a rum similar to the style of the French brandies and cognacs. Originally, as per European tradition, this rum was made only for the consumption of family and guests. At the time, this rum was served directly from the barrel and thus his guests had affectionately named the rum "Ron del Barrilito" (Rum from the Barrel). Since 1880, the Fernández Family has used the same secret formula and aging process which creates a uniquely smooth and mellow rum that connoisseurs have come to love over generations.

As our rum rests in certified Oloroso sherry casks, a small portion naturally evaporates over the years. This is commonly known as the “angel’s share”, and it’s part of what makes the aging process so special. What remains continues its journey in the cask, until it’s slowly transformed into the world’s finest sipping rum. Some things are worth the wait.

As the oldest rum in Puerto Rico, history surrounds us. Right next to our aging rooms is this iconic windmill, a beloved landmark at. It actually predates Ron del Barrilito, as it was built in the early 19th century! Today, it's still standing strong, and we still craft our rum in the same place and authentic way that our founder, Don Pedro Fernández, taught us generations ago .
