2026 Organic certification for Keela.

Every year, we have an inspection to check the farm and our paperwork, and are issued a new certificate.

Why become organic certified?
- Prove that you are following all the steps to quality as organic.
-Increase your subsidy payments from the government to help fund the land regeneration work.
-Learn organic farming methods from the technicians who visit
-Increase your relations with organic farming organisations, associations and ambassadors.

Join us at keela to see how we practice permaculture principles and have them certified as an organic farm.

Or ask us for more info on certifying your place in portugal in the comments

Weeping willows tell you when to irrigate your tree plantations.

I call this an indicator tree as it gets thirsty before the other species if trees and shows you it's thirsty. Where other trees may die if they get that much water stress.

The weeping willows gets thirsty before the other trees as it has shallower roots.

You can also use annuals or shuns as indicator plants at the end of your tree rows. Ideally planted somewhere where you walk a lot

Three methods that I use to plant potatoes as I can't manage to store them without them going bad!

1. Plant a bed every few weeks.
2. Put early harvest potatoes and late harvest potatoes into the succession yo have a larger range of when they will be ready
3. Harvest daily and eat them straight out the ground. Harvest them early when they are tiny, then when they are ready and when they are late. Then just store a few for a week or so until the next bed is ready.

Garden update. Growing nutritious vegetables by doing annual soil tests and adding the write type of home made compost to ensure all nutrients are available in the soil for the plants.

If the nutrients are not in the soil, then they are not in the plants then we are not getting them.

Lazy or efficient way to grow a succession of beetroots.

Simply prepare two beds at the same time and plant seedlings in one and seeds in the other. Centralising the work to one day, making the daily hand watering more efficient and not needing to grow seeds in the green house.

Come and learn more tips and tricks with us on our permaculture courses or as a volunteer in central Portugal.
