Design shapes and squeezes culture, and Juicy Salif by is the proof.
Commissioned by Alessi to design a steel tray, in 1990 Starck instead turned a holiday moment in the Italian isle of Capraia into something unexpected. He ordered squid and, when it arrived without lemon, sketched an idea on a pizza placemat. That drawing became Juicy Salif: a citrus squeezer that transcended function to become a cultural icon, immediately recognized by Alberto Alessi for its disruptive potential.
More than a functional object and more than an alien-like fantasy, it became over the decades a catalyst for discussion. Because, as Alberto Alessi said, “a true work of design must know how to move.”
