🇵🇹 Do you know it? The Vinho-Verde region.

If you don't know it, you are on the right publication

You have to go back to the 12th century, where the first traces of its existence were found. It is one of the oldest regions in Portugal and the world.

📍 Located in the northwest of Portugal, it is bordered to the north by the Minho River and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean (see map).

We find soils of granitic origin with some areas of schist. In winter and spring there is heavy rainfall and in summer the climate is rather hot and dry.

The Vinho-verde region is divided into 9 sub-regions (see map): Amarante, Ave, Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção and Melgaço, Paiva, Sousa, with the appellations DOC and IGP Minho.

Vinho-verde, which is known for its white wines, is produced with 6 different grape varieties.

Alvarinho is the most famous and is considered to be of superior quality. It gives the wine floral and citrus aromas.

Loureiro, an autochthonous grape variety that is making a comeback. It gives the wine bright fruit aromas such as green apple and pear.

Trajadura, a less acidic variety used in blends to reduce acidity. It brings peach and pear aromas.

Arinto, a very acidic variety with lemon, apple and pear aromas.

Avesso, produced mainly in the south. Aromas of orange, peach and dried fruit.

Aval, a full-bodied variety with lemon and green apple aromas.

But there are also red wines produced with 2 different grape varieties.

The Vinhao, cultivated throughout the region, is very colourful and gives opaque, vinous and sugar-rich wines.

The Espadeiro, more acidic, gives very good rosés.
