Over 2 million Americans using private wells consume water with arsenic levels exceeding the EPA limit of 10 parts per billion. Because federal regulations do not apply to private wells, homeowners are solely responsible for testing and treatment.

The United States Geological Survey analyzed over 20,000 domestic wells to map exposure risks. Arsenic is a naturally occurring heavy metal that leaches from bedrock into groundwater, and since you cannot see, taste, or smell it, analytical testing through a certified laboratory is the only way to quantify your exposure.

The data shows specific geographical risks:

📍 High Exposure Populations: California, North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan have the highest total number of people likely consuming water above the EPA limit.

📍 High Probability Zones: Minnesota, Michigan, New Mexico, New Hampshire, and Maine show the highest statistical probability of elevated arsenic.

The most effective way to ensure your water is free of heavy metals is to use a filtration system certified to reduce the contaminants found in your area. When selecting a product, ensure it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 53 or NSF/ANSI Standard 58 specifically for arsenic reduction.
