Tomorrow night, Terr[a]nce cooks his first ever event on his own. South African Indian Curry Night.

This is what Tuesday evening looked like: minced chicken curry waiting on its peas, a beef curry that's been tenderising for hours, a Malva pudding heading for the custard — or crème anglaise, as they call it on this side of the world — and a chai rooibos to start.

He didn't advertise this one. He invited people, and it filled up before we could say anything about it.

You asked. A lot of you asked, actually.
So from tomorrow, we're open on Tuesdays too — 10:00 to 14:30.
It started as the same question over and over at the counter: "are you open on Tuesday?" For a long time the answer was no. From tomorrow it's yes. Same kitchen, same cakes, same nobody-rushing-you.
A quieter day, a slower room, and probably the best chance you'll get at the table by the window.
Tuesdays, 10:00–14:30. See you tomorrow.

Bring the dog. Seriously — the sticker on our door says so.

Sunday is brunch day at Hora Mansa, and dogs are welcome at the table like everyone else. Ours is the kind of place where nobody minds a lead tied to a chair leg and a bowl of water arriving unasked.

Open Sunday from 9:30. Come early — Sundays wrap up at 14:00 and the good stuff goes first.

Tag someone whose dog would absolutely order for them.

This weekend, the door is open and there's a table with your name on it.

There will be bread coming out of the oven, cakes that Terr[a]nce finished the night before, coffee that takes as long as it takes, and a room that stays warm even when the avenue outside turns grey. If you come alone, bring a book. If you come with people, bring the ones who talk too much. Bring the dog. Bring your mother.

Saturday and Sunday, from 9:30. Sundays we close at 14:00 and Sunday has its own menu, so come hungry and come early.

We're not going anywhere and we're not counting your minutes. That's the whole point of the name — hora mansa, the gentle hour, the one that doesn't rush you.

We open at 9:30 tomorrow, and there's a good reason to come early and a good reason to come late.

Early: the Avo Benny. Poached eggs and smashed avocado with hollandaise, on cheddar artisan toast. It's the one people order and then photograph before they eat it.

Later: the Hearty Sweet Heat Bowl. Greens, spinach, lemon quinoa, grilled halloumi, avocado, roasted carrots, tomatoes and roasted walnuts, finished with a hot honey drizzle. It fills you up without ruining your afternoon.

Breakfast or lunch, the table is the same and nobody is going to rush you.

I'm Terr[a]nce, I own Hora Mansa, and this is my kitchen at the end of the night.

Everyone has gone home and I'm still here finishing the baking. It's my favourite part of the day, actually. It's quiet, nobody needs anything, and I get to just make things.

Tonight I'm doing our carrot cake, the one people keep coming back for, with the frosting already waiting. The German chocolate is done. And I finished a new one that I'm quite proud of: a vegan latte caramel cake.

We open at 9:30 tomorrow. Come and see which of them is still on the counter.

The best seat we have isn't inside.

It's the one under the plane trees on Rodrigues de Freitas, where the late afternoon light comes in sideways and the whole avenue slows down with you.

Inside: the Avo Benny, eggs and smashed avocado on good bread. The Californian Chicken Salad, green apple, pear and pickled onion over leaves. And cake that gets carried out whole before anyone touches it. Come and meet them properly.

Outside: a table, a tree, and no reason to hurry.

Stay ten minutes. Stay two hours. Nobody here is counting — Hora Mansa means the gentle hour, the one that doesn't rush you.

A few weeks ago a group of us met for coffee at Hora Mansa, on the terrace on Av. de Rodrigues de Freitas. Tables outside, under the trees. People stayed talking for hours.

No programme, no tickets, no theme — just a table you can turn up to on your own.

We're setting the date for the next one now. Comment or drop me a message and I'll tell you as soon as it's fixed — easier than trying to catch a post in the feed.

Behind the red curtains, this room was built so that nobody outside could see in.

Today the light comes through the front, lands on a peach wall, and the whole street can see exactly what is going on in here. Which is: someone reading. Someone on their second coffee. Someone who came in for ten minutes and is still here forty minutes later.

That is the entire point. The name means the gentle hour — the one that does not rush you. A building that was once designed to hide people now exists to slow them down.

None of it was done alone. designed the space. The builders, the tiler, the electricians turned it into a room. And the neighbourhood has been walking in since day one.

One year of work, one street corner, one very good year. Thank you — genuinely.

For about a week, this pavement looked like a delivery depot.

Fridges. An extraction hood. Stainless steel benches. A display cabinet. All of it arrives at once, wrapped in plastic, stacked against a hundred-year-old granite wall while somebody works out how to get a two-metre counter through a door that was not designed for it.

People walking past would slow down and look. Some of them asked what was going in. That was the first time this stopped being a private project and became something the street knew about.

A café is a lot of heavy metal boxes before it is ever a flat white.
