VIDA VINHA – FONTE SALGADA 2024
By Sommelier Mikkel Albjerg Fischer
The first white wine from Vida Vinha, made primarily from Arinto with a small addition of Antão Vaz. A convincing debut, bringing together tradition, terroir, and modern winemaking. The wine appears brilliant straw yellow with golden highlights, showing depth of colour right to the rim.
Its eight months in used oak are only faintly noticeable on the nose, well integrated into the wine’s overall expression. In keeping with this, there is a subtle oxidative character that, together with extended ageing on the fine lees, brings aromas of lightly roasted cashews and toast, creating an expectation of a creamy texture and full-bodiedness.
For the first 45 seconds after pouring, however, the leading note is a Riesling-like hint of petrol, evoking thoughts of bottle age, sunshine, and maturation. As this “petrol station” gradually dissipates, the bouquet opens into a more nuanced yet still expressive profile of dried grass, dusty grain fields, white and purple wildflowers, sweet heather honey, and, not least, generous citrus fruit. The lemon appears almost preserved in brine, while pomelo and grapefruit seem freshly picked from the tree.
On the palate, the anticipated creaminess and richness are partly challenged by a crisp, cool linearity. The acidity is pronounced without becoming hysterical, reinforcing the overall impression of a focused, precise, and ambitious wine.
Overall, based on the two wines released at the time of writing (Fonte Salgada and Prima), the 2024 vintage from Vida Vinha represents an ambitious, intriguing, and stylistically well-defined debut - one that is certainly worth following in the years to come.
