Most people see onion skins as something to throw away.

I just did the math on my own work. 10 hours to make one object. Sells for 12-15€. That's 1,50€ an hour. 3 to 4 times below minimum wage.

And I'm not alone. Ask any artisan, any small baker, any ceramicist. This is the norm, not the exception.

We live in a world that says it values handmade things — that romanticizes craft, shares beautiful photos of it, builds whole aesthetics around it. But when it's time to open a wallet? The cheap factory version wins.

You can't eat admiration.

The problem isn't that artisans don't work hard enough, or don't market themselves well enough. The problem is that the market was never designed to value human time and skill fairly. It was designed to reward scale and speed.

A machine doesn't need to eat. It doesn't need rent. It doesn't need 10 years to learn its craft.

So next time you hold something handmade — really hold it — and think about what it actually cost the person who made it. Not in materials. In life.
