The Bee Zone

The Bee Zone Natural, low impact, holistic, bee-centric, bee-keeping. The BeeZone is about cooperating with & supporting bees. So too does a society of bees. About us.

We are Organic Honey Producers and our ultimate aim is the conservation of the bees! Our home and amazing bees are in the deep forests of North Värmland, Sweden. The unique autumn honey from this area is called “Heather honey” or “Ljunghonung”, “Heidehoning”, “Heide-Honig”, it is dark and rich in flavor known for its benefits and contribution to the health of our bodies. On our travels we have met

other high quality honey and related products and wish to make them available to you. We respect the natural organic ‘collective intelligence’ of the bee-society. Each bee-society is a separate intelligent being with different characteristics and different responses. To varying degrees a person, a dog, a horse or a dolphin has an individual character. A Bee hive or “honey bee society” is now recognized scientifically as a superorganism, which means that the whole community is regarded as an individual and that single bees, in that society are like the cells of a body with their various tasks. My Father kept bees in northern England. I was carpenter. My wife, who helps and supports me in all this, is a Karate instructor also runs a therapeutic and sports injury clinic and is a mother to our 5 year old son. We started this venture in the north of Sweden, 60 km from the Arctic Circle. We did our homework with the education and support of a generous local professional bee-keeper and a local farming consultancy agency. Then we set up “Swedish Arctic Honey”. The first harvests were good and we had much enthusiastic support from the local people. We looked like reaching our target of viability in 4 years. We won the Local Environmental Business award. Then the weather struck. 2012 was the worst honey harvest in the memory of old local beekeepers. Due to exceptional rain and little sun, we averaged 3 kg per society against a normal expected yield of 25 kg per society in that region. The next year was hardly better! Many bee-keepers lost all their bees. The land of 24 hour sun, in recent history, produces a good crop of honey with the intensity of a short summer of 24 hour sunshine, but the absence of that sun for two years running was against us! To give our bees a better environment, we had to move south where the summer is longer. We continued to support the bees from our other work while we looked for the right place and then we were miraculously offered the house where we live now, Gustavsfors, Värmland, which is in an environment that is perfect for bees. This is an amazing forest area that is totally free from chemicals, dense traffic and the side effects of mono-agriculture. Our Aim: A SUSTAINABLE, bee conservation zone. A disease-free, insecticide-free, herbicide-free, bee sanctuary. Deep in the sparsely populated forest of “the wild outback” of Sweden. Now we cooperate with about 90 bee-societies throughout this wonderful forested wilderness. Together we produce and sell the most amazing summer and autumn honey and also produce new offshoot bee-societies for new or existing beekeepers. You are welcome to purchase directly from us or from the shops who sell our products. To visit us, it is best to call first, enter “Swedish Wild Honey” into Google Maps, to find us. What do Bees do in the winter cold ?
Here at TheBeeZone.org it can be minus 21 Deg. C outside and some times down to minus 35 deg C for a few days. This is no problem for the bees. The bees cluster into a ball around the queen, rather like penguins in Antarctica. The centre temperature is (plus) 34 Deg. C. The ones on the outside move inwards the inside bees move outwards, they share warmth. Using honey stores as fuel, some “Heater Bees” use their wing muscle to produce heat. The honeybee have 2 pairs of large indirect flight muscles that change the shape of the thorax, this causes the wings to beat up and down. In flight one pair contacts as the other pair relax. When “Heater Bees” produce heat, both pairs contract together then relax together. So they don't actually beat their wings but produce heat, this raise their body temps to 44 C, which is about 9 degrees higher than their usual body temperature. Bees at the outside of the ball act as insulation. If a bee's body temperature drops below 5 C it dies. Snow is a great insulator but we do also use polystyrene foam hive bodies.

Our bees make one of the cleanest, non-polluted honey in the world. There is no agro-chemical farming within miles of our wild forest location. We do not use any chemical treatment on our bees. We need your support, help us and buy our Organic honey and or share this with your friends

We started our honey season with shock and disaster !! 63 of our 90 bee communities died during the very untypical climate change winter.
