Whew, did that just happen? And by that, I mean May. I feel like I blinked and it was June 1. May starts with the garden being, more or less, a blank canvas and one month later you see onion tops and potatoes growing and the first heads of dahlias popping up. I wonder how many seeds were planted in the roughly 480K steps that were taken in the month of May? I do know that about 400 holes were dug to plant dahlia tubers. In between we started enjoying evenings under the apple tree and we squeezed a Mother’s Day in between the official US and Swedish mom’s day weekends. Everything is growing now, including the w**ds so we welcome June, hoe in hand, nurturing the growing process and ready to start working with all the good things nature starts to provide.

When May comes around I look a bit like a kid on the night before Christmas, I just can’t wait. And then the cold east winds remind me that I indeed do have to wait. But in the meantime there is still a lot to be excited about. The promise of summer berries is evident in the strawberry beds and on the currant, blueberry and gooseberry bushes. They don’t seem to mind the easterly winds as much as I do.

There is an old Swedish saying “rye in the back” (råg i ryggen) that when said of someone generally means that person is strong both mentally and physically, has a good character and stands up for ones beliefs. It is believed this comes from the idea that eating bread or food made from rye makes one strong.

We have planted an old type of spring rye this year. After several years of wheat it is a good beneficial crop for organic matter replacement and w**d control among other things.

I was gifted some dehydrated rye sourdough starter from an apparently very old source. After rehydration and activation, the first loaf was a success and I look forward to trying some new recipes. I can always use some more “strong” in my back.

We still have loads of our heritage ölands wheat flour available while we wait for this years rye. You can find out more on our website or by dropping me a dm.

The website is finally out there in the world and on it you can find the recipe for this grain free muesli. This recipe is a higher protein and grain free modification to the traditional muesli that I make. It’s great as a traditional topping for yogurt but it’s also a great add on to ice cream, sprinkled over a salad or just eaten by the handful as a snack.

I’m a little nervous finally publishing this site but that doesn’t mean I’m not fully welcoming your feedback. Me and my team, and by team I mean Louis and Bella 🐶, are not marketing experts or website designers so we appreciate your feedback on what works or doesn’t work. Forgive any typos but please let me know if you spot one. Thanks for all the encouragement that got me here.

When you grow dahlia’s from seed you get the excitement of waiting to see what the flowers look like. Growing dahlia from tuber results in blooms that look like the parent but when you grow from seed you don’t know exactly how it will look. The blossoms in photo 2 are the parent plants of these seeds and they originated from Floret Bee’s Choice seeds and many are collarette style. These seeds will likely produce something similar. Now is the time to get the seeds started under grow lights or in a greenhouse. Seeds will be available in the farm stand. Feel free to drop a dm if you have questions.

Winter arrived and I hunkered down. It has been nice with a quiet month of thinking and planning and working on things behind the scenes. Quiet from socials doesn’t mean things aren’t happening and in fact a lot has been happening. But it has been nice to just take it all in, often free from the phone, but I have managed to capture a few photos. But now March is arriving. Baked goods are going to be back in the farm kiosk starting today. The seeds starting trays are full and the mapping of the garden is, more or less, complete. I’ve been cleaning and storing dahlia seeds from last season that I’ll make available in the farm kiosk very soon. We managed a great trip back home to Wyoming where we started some remodel work and played with old tractors and family. The big snow piles are starting to melt but I think they’ll be around for a while longer. But it’s warm enough to get out and start some spring pruning. For now the bee hives remained closed but we hope the weather continues to warm so we can take an early sneak peek soon. Oh ya, and the website. Well, I just need to tamp down the self doubt and publish it. Big sigh….maybe soon. I am so excited for spring but for now the preparations continue. Welcome March.

On a cold and windy last day of January, 4 years from photo 2, the inner roof and wall supports have finally come down. The roof and walls remained standing which means my in-house engineer must have done a good job designing the new ones. This is a milestone we have been working toward for a long time so we celebrate tonight. The next steps are going to also be exciting.

These are real questions that my dear sweet husband has had to ask. Being a dual nationality household means that quite often there are language, culture or traditions that makes the other one scratch their head, wrinkle their nose or just laugh out loud.

For the record, the origin of the food Sloppy Joe seems unclear. But, where I grew up it was often found at big gatherings of people or for school events or wherever something warm and easy was a must. The good news is that the school lunch version can be greatly improved upon (no icky dried spice and preservative pack needed).

This time I’m serious, the website launch is coming soon where you will find a DIY Sloppy Joe recipe and much more.

I’ll save the chili cheeseburger story for another time. I laugh every time I think about it.

Stay tuned.

We think that the best way for our flowers to find the most homes is to let you come and pick them yourselves. I get a bit nervous just putting that out in to the world. Gulp. Could it work? Do we have enough flowers? Am I going to lose my mind seeing people traipsing through the flower patch. But I’m not a real flower farmer. So many great self help quotes come to mind. Hahaha. Ok, you’ve convinced me. Let’s do it! Now we all have something to look forward to in about 6 months. See you this summer.
