Not quite Lau Pa Sat… but you’ll feel right at home.

In Spain, we don’t call them hawkers.
We call them mercados.

They started as simple neighborhood markets — fishermen unloading the morning catch, farmers stacking seasonal produce, locals doing their daily shop. Places full of noise, life, and routine.

But something changed.

Today we’re traveling to Catalonia, where calçot season is in full swing! 🌱🔥

But what exactly is a calçotada? It’s much more than just a meal—it’s a true Catalan tradition and a social celebration. Friends and family gather outdoors around a grill to cook calçots (sweet, tender spring onions) over an open flame until they’re perfectly charred on the outside and soft on the inside.

Once ready, they’re wrapped in newspaper to keep warm, then peeled by hand and dipped generously into a rich, nutty romesco sauce. The best part? There’s a fun ritual to it—you lift the calçot high above your head and lower it into your mouth in one bite! Expect laughter, messy hands, and lots of great company.
