In the summer of 2014, we discovered Vipava. Gazing out at the wine-growing hills of Podnanos, we saw two completely contrasting scenes. The vines on one side on the hills were bright green with uniformly-colored fruit glistening in the sunshine. Each grape was spotless. On the other side of the hills was a thicker, sprawling vineyard, with darker grapes that were covered with wild yeast. These gr
apes became the inspiration for Ugly Wine. After drinking our way across the valley, we realised these grapes in particular were biodynamically grown, harvested and made into wine under very strict traditional and organic methods. This resulted in wine with flavors that were vibrant and exquisitely balanced, capable of expressing a sense of place through aroma, flavor, and texture. As ugly as the grapes first looked, the wine they produced were simply unmatched. We made a few friends in Vipava - among them farmers and producers of the best biodynamic and organic Slovenian wine. More than just a certification, their wines are great because of their craftsmanship and meticulous dedication to quality. Now, we'll let our wines do the rest of the talking.
