Trivial pursuit bits: What Chinese dish left contemporary gourmet Lucille Han(ιŸ“θ‰―ιœ²)awestruck and led her to describe it as romantic, universal and shared by people all over the world, a kind of "ancient buffet" that allows you to enjoy dozens of tastes in a single bite?

This is also the same food that inspired many of the greatest ancient Chinese poets including Tu Fu(ζœη”«), Su Shi(θ˜‡θ»Ύ)and Lu You(ι™ΈιŠ)to scribe famous lines hundreds of years ago in celebration of an ancient traditional food that is still widely popular today.

The food in question is runbing(ζ½€ι€…), lumpia, popiah, a type of non-fried spring roll that is a commonly found food which not only contains dozens of fresh and delicious ingredients, but is also a part of a long-treasured tradition in specialty foods that goes back nearly a thousand years in Chinese culture around the world.

Trivial pursuit bits: How is Han Shi Jie(ε―’ι£Ÿη―€)or Cold Food Festival connected to Ching Ming (ζΈ…ζ˜Ž)?

Since no fires could be set to make food, and the festival (Han Shi Jie, ε―’ι£Ÿη―€) occurred at springtime just as buds were beginning to sprout in the fields, people ate uncooked spring rolls on this day which contained all kinds of freshly-picked vegetables.

It later became a habit for people to worship their ancestors at their tombs during the Cold Food Festival. This practice and the eating of runbing were both later moved back a few days to coincide with the Ching Ming Tomb Sweeping Day, since the two festivals were close in time anyway.

Trivial pursuit bits: Why did Duke Wen honour Jie Zitui(δ»‹εζŽ¨) in Han Shi Jie(ε―’ι£Ÿη―€)or Cold Food Festival?

Jie was one of followers of Duke Wen of Jin. Before he became a duke and earned the title of one of the top five dukes of the period, Wen was in a hardship exile for 19 years, during which time Jie was a devotee and hardcore follower of Wen.

Jie even cut a piece of meat from his own thigh to make a meat soup for Wen when the future duke had nothing to eat during his exile. To repay Jie's dedication and devotion, Wen promised to reward him one day. When he finally became a Duke, however, Wen rewarded just about everyone who helped him during his worst decades but for some reason or other forgot to reward

Jie, who by then had moved into the mountains with his mother, refused to take any position as a reward. Anxious to locate his most devoted follower, Wen followed an ill-advised suggestion from one of his subordinates and set the mountain on fire to force Jie out. Unfortunately Jie refused to give in and ultimately died in the fire along with his mother.

Feeling remorseful, Duke Wen ordered everyone to go three days without lighting a fire to honor Jie for his loyalty and devotion as well as his piety to his mother. On this day one can only eat cold food, and the signature food of the ancient festival was - as you might have guessed already - run bing, (popiah) as it does not need to be cooked over a fire.

Trivial pursuit bits: How did Han Shi Jie(ε―’ι£Ÿη―€)or Cold Food Festival come about?

There is a sad story behind the special tradition of eating run bing (popiah) on Cold Food Day. The festival is in fact a memorial day for the ancient scholar Jie Zitui(δ»‹εζŽ¨)who lived during the Chinese Spring and Autumn Period between 770 BC and 476 BC.

Duke Wen ordered everyone to go three days without lighting a fire to honor Jie for his loyalty and devotion as well as his piety to his mother.

Since no fires could be set to make food, and the festival occurred at springtime just as buds were beginning to sprout in the fields, people ate uncooked spring rolls on this day which contained all kinds of freshly-picked vegetables.

Trivial pursuit bits: Ever wondered why popiah is connected to Qing Ming?

The literal meaning of the festival's Chinese name,(ζΈ…ζ˜Ž), means pure and bright, suggesting a time when people go out and enjoy the greenery of springtime. It later turned into a festival to memorialize the deceased and to tend to the graves of departed ones.

Back during the ancient Chinese Tang and Sung dynasties, however, which held sway from around 600 to 1200 AD, the festival was seen as an extension of another festival that fell only a few days before it, Han Shi Jie(ε―’ι£Ÿη―€)or Cold Food Festival.

As the self-explanatory name suggests, on this day one can only eat cold food, and the signature food of the ancient festival was - as you might have guessed already - run bing (popiah), as it does not need to be cooked over a fire.
