On 31 July 1970, the Royal Navy poured its last tot of rum.

For three centuries, every sailor was owed his measure โ€” unofficially from 1655, by order of the Crown from 1731. Strength was tested with gunpowder. If the powder still lit, the rum was proof.

Then the pipe fell silent. Men wore black armbands. Some held burials at sea for their final tot.

But the rum itself never left. It was sealed into stone flagons and forgotten in naval stores for forty years โ€” the last British Royal Naval rum in existence, bottled exactly as it was issued.

56 years on, a small number remain.
