We are moving into the 2nd wave of this durian season. The early Johor durian season is over. If you miss out on the Golden Phoenix and D13, then you will have to wait till next season. Penang’s Red Prawn will come into season later. Right now we have the D24, Tekka, Buttercream and Kampong Durians at jaw dropping prices.

This batch of Johor’s Mao Shan Wang (aka Musang King) is so ugly that we had a hard time taking nice pictures of it. The one you see here is the best we can do even after much touch up by world class photographer

In the end, we made the decision to show the seeds sticking out of the flesh. The reason this happens is because the seed is flat and broad unlike most durian seeds that are rounder and more oval shaped. The flat shaped seeds ‘cut through’ the flesh revealing itself naked.
Looks aside, this Mountain Cat has so far been voted the most yummy of all the durians offered in this early season. It has a super bitter aftertaste. Do grab it before its all gone.

D13, Red Prawn and Black Gold are sold out! If you are eating the last 3 varieties together, then our suggestion is to eat the Buttercream first, followed by the Kampung Durian and finally end on a high with the Musang King.

IT’S A MISTAKE!!!
After the photoshoot, we wanted to sample all the 6 different durian cultivars. Because Kampung Durian was the cheapest and the most ordinary, we decided to eat that first before going on to the more complex varieties. WRONG MOVE! It tasted so good that our tongues cannot fully appreciate the durian flavours of the other varieties except for Musang King.

Pic: Freshly Frozen Black Gold Durian

PRO TIP: To keep Durians Fresh is to Freeze it!

Frozen fruits turn watery during the thaw. But not durians.

Unlike most fruits, durian flesh comprises of little water. When fruits are frozen, the frozen water inside each cell expands and damages the cell membrane containing it. When the fruit is thawed, these cell water ‘flow out’ making the fruit watery, accelerating decomposition. But not durians.

The durian flesh is the freshest for consumption when the durian is opened within 24h from the time the durian falls from the tree. When it is frozen during this golden time window, the freshness is retained for as long as it remains frozen.

Freshly Frozen durians are flash frozen durians that have not exceeded 24h after falling from the tree. They are either frozen as a whole fruit or the flesh is extracted and vacuum-packed before freezing.

Typically, it takes 40–80 mins for the frozen durian to thaw completely before the durians’ full flavours are released. For creamier durians like D24 and MSW, you might like to experiment thawing it for 30mins before consuming. It tastes like a luxurious durian ice-cream. We have found that the bitterness in Black Gold durians is accentuated when it is still very cold.
