I once spent $10 on a chocolate ice cream cone. That was in 2010, when jeans were tight, one bitcoin was 70 cents, and dubstep was a thing.
Even now, $10 for an ice cream cone would be expensive. Back then, it was ridiculous.
But it was so tempting. I bought it from a shop owned by an old and famous European premium chocolate brand. As you’d expect from an old and famous European premium chocolate brand, the interior was opulent—lots of dark polished wood with gold trimmings. Shelves full of expensive chocolate bars. Everyone spoke a little softer in the shop. Surely, a brand like this would have amazing chocolate ice cream.
Right?
The texture was too thin—too much air and too little ice cream. And definitely too little chocolate; it tasted only slightly more chocolatey than fast food ice cream. It tasted like the brand was coasting on its reputation. It tasted like disappointment.
Fast forward to 2024, I had the chance to create my own chocolate ice cream. It had to be what I thought that $10 chocolate ice cream cone should’ve been. It took a month of experimenting but it was worth it. Thicc chocolatey flavour from dark chocolate chunks blended with dark cocoa powder. Thicc texture achieved with a technique I’m not ready to reveal yet.
No polished wood with gold trimmings, no billion-dollar century-old brand, just very good dark chocolate ice cream.
