Miss Saigon Singapore
Verdict: Go ✅
4.5/5 ⭐️

Miss Saigon at Fortune Centre is best known for its Banh Mi and for good reason. It’s actually by the same folks behind Banh Mi Saigon at Ang Mo Kio, which is already a cult favourite among Banh Mi lovers.

My personal favourites are the Special Great Banh Mi and the Roasted Pork Banh Mi. The bread is perfectly toasted, light yet super crispy though it might be a little tough for the elderly to bite into. The fillings are generous and well-seasoned, every bite packed with that satisfying crunch and flavour.

We also tried the Fried Banana, which was surprisingly good. Crispy on the outside, fragrant, and the banana inside was nicely ripened, soft and sweet without that overripe, alcoholic aftertaste I can’t stand.

Somehow, even though everything looks and tastes quite similar, I still slightly prefer the original Ang Mo Kio outlet. But if you’re craving a Banh Mi fix late at night, they’ve got another branch at Orchard Plaza too. Honestly, this is still the best Banh Mi I’ve had even compared to the ones I’ve tried in Hanoi.

Glasshouse Creamery
Verdict: Try It Yourself ❔
3/5 ⭐️

We got the duo set with two scoops of ice cream, pistachio and dark chocolate. The dark chocolate was rich, smooth, and nicely balanced with a hint of bitterness. But the pistachio caught me off guard, it oddly tasted like durian, which left me genuinely confused.

The waffle had a mochi base that gave it a great chewy texture, which I loved. Texture-wise it was spot on, but it felt like it lacked flavour overall. Personally, I still prefer nian gao waffles, they’ve got that same chewiness but with a touch of brown sugar that adds depth and sweetness.

Vernacular Coffee
Verdict: Go ✅
4/5 ⭐️

The real standout at Vernacular Coffee is its impressive selection of single origin beans, far more than what you’d usually find at most cafes in Singapore. Not just two or three options, but eight distinct varieties, mostly sourced from around Southeast Asia.

I had the iced oat latte with beans from Maesuai, Chiang Rai (Thailand) and loved it, it was smooth, chocolatey and well-balanced without being too heavy. For the mocha latte though, you don’t get to choose the beans, and mine had a more fruity, slightly sour profile. I’m not a fan of fruity notes in coffee, so that wasn’t really for me, but coffee purists might enjoy the complexity.

We also got the Kurobuta Sausage & Mushroom Danish, and it was such a pleasant surprise. The pastry was buttery and flaky, with layers that broke apart beautifully, and the filling had just the right balance of savoury sausage, earthy mushrooms, and a hint of sweetness from the glaze. It felt indulgent yet comforting, definitely something I’d get again.

Steamov
Try It Yourself ❔
3/5 ⭐️

Steamov’s “supermarket-style” hotpot concept is pretty cool. Clean layout, modern vibes, and super easy to browse. There’s a ton of ingredient choices and it’s definitely value for money.

The soup bases are okay, nothing mind-blowing, but the 香辣 one is my go-to for a solid, spicy supper. Probably wouldn’t come here for lunch or dinner, but for a late night fix, it does the job.

For four adults eating till we were stuffed, the total was only $103, which is a steal compared to most hotpot spots that easily hit $150–$200.

RAPPU
Verdict: Go ✅
4.7/5 ⭐️

We started with the Hyogo oysters with shiso ponzu, it was super fresh, plump, and naturally sweet. The ponzu added that bright tang while the shiso gave a nice clean finish.

Then came the Jigo 5: hotate with nikiri, kombu and lime, akami with red pepper nikiri and chives, salmon with mentaiko mayo and tempura crumbs, toro with spicy leeks, and crab with tobiko, kewpie and togarashi. Every roll just worked. The flavours, the textures all perfectly balanced. Even as someone who doesn’t usually like raw fish, I loved every bite.

The Wagyu High Roller with uni, ikura and caviar was the absolute highlight. Everything melted so nicely in my mouth, I’m still thinking about it.

We also got the Engawa with miso mayo and smoked salt, and the Chicken Nanban ( tempura battered chicken thigh with curry egg mayo ). One rich and buttery, the other crispy and comforting.

Ended off with complimentary miso soup and tamagoyaki, which wrapped up the meal perfectly.

Loyang Way Big Prawn Noodles
Verdict: Go ✅
4.5/5 ⭐️

We got the prawn + pork rib kway teow dry with added intestines. If you can handle spice, definitely go for the spicy version. The noodles were perfectly seasoned, springy and coated with that rich, savoury sauce. The soup on the side was full-bodied and flavourful (I always add a bit of their chilli powder for that extra kick).

The prawns were fresh, not the biggest but sweet and firm. The pork ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, and the intestines were properly cleaned and cooked till soft with zero bitterness (a must for intestine lovers).

This place has been my go-to prawn mee for years, and no other has managed to beat it. It’s also a long-time family breakfast favourite.

B.B.Q Seafood
Verdict: Go ✅
4/5 ⭐️

I recently checked out B.B.Q Seafood in Taman Jurong, and I’m already planning my next trip back. Yeah, it’s a bit of a hike from the east, but trust me, it’s worth it.

Their BBQ Sambal Stingray, Sambal Kangkong, and BBQ Sambal Prawns were all winners. The sambal sauce added this depth of flavor that just elevated each dish.

The kang kong was cooked just right - not too raw, not too overcooked. The stingray was tender and flavorful, with a generous serving of sambal sauce. And the prawns? Fresh, succulent, and spicy - what’s not to love?

Adding a squeeze of lime, some chinchalok, and crunchy raw onions to each dish took it to a whole new level. It’s those little touches that make all the difference.

Only minor gripe - the kang kong could do with a bit less oil. But overall, B.B.Q Seafood’s a must-visit for seafood lovers.

Will I return? Hell yeah! Despite the distance, I’d gladly come back for more.

Nakhon Kitchen
Verdict: Go ✅
4/5 ⭐️

Nakhon Kitchen is basically a household name in Singapore, and for good reason.

We hit up the Kovan outlet and, yeah, the queue was still crazy long, but it was worth it.

We ordered a bunch of dishes to share, and here’s what we thought: The Papaya Salad was super refreshing and had just the right amount of spice. The Braised Pork Trotters were tender and fell-apart easy, and the chili sauce they came with was amazing. The Sotong in Thai Spicy Sour Lime Sauce was insane - the sauce was so good we could drink it like soup, and the sotong was cooked perfectly.

My personal favorite was the Claypot Prawn Vermicelli - the vermicelli was seasoned to perfection with just the right amount of wok hei. The Thai Style Kangkong was cooked just right and seasoned nicely, but might be a tad salty if you’re not having it with rice. The Pineapple Fried Rice was pretty standard, nothing special.

What really sets Nakhon Kitchen apart, though, is the value for money - you get top-notch Thai food without breaking the bank.

And the best part? It’s consistent - they don’t compromise on quality, no matter how many outlets they open.

Nakhon Kitchen’s still the go-to spot for delicious, affordable Thai food - no wonder it’s still packed after all these years!
