Patriarch Alfred Cathiard worked at legendary domaines like DRC and Domaine Lamarche. In the early years, the family sold most of their grapes to négociants. The true rise to Burgundy's elite began with Sylvain Cathiard, who graduated from Beaune Wine School, worked with his father, and launched his own small domaine in 1986 through relentless dedication to quality.

Unlike standard Bourgogne Rouge which may be purchased from various sources, Cathiard's bottling comes from old vines (often between 30 and 60 years old) planted in prime parcels located on the slopes just outside (or bordering) the Vosne-Romanée appellation. This terroir is significantly superior to the flat plains where most regional Bourgogne is grown.
