Love For Wagashi

Love For Wagashi Freshly made, handcrafted traditional Japanese wagashi in Singapore. Pre-order only, no walk-ins.

Wagashi is a broad term used to describe traditional Japanese confections that are typically enjoyed with green tea. Wagashi translates to “Japanese sweets” or “Japanese snacks”

LoveForWagashi offers fresh handcrafted Nerikiri, which is a type of wagashi that is made with white bean paste, sugar & glutinous rice flour. Nerikiri are soft and smooth, they have a light flavour that is not overwhelmi

ngly sweet; and are typically filled with fragrant white bean paste or red bean paste. Nerikiri often feature beautiful and intricate designs which make them works of art along with being delicious treats. The designs and flavors can vary based on region, season, or simply the artisan’s own vision.

The colors of Christmas
Temari / 手毬 / てまり

Traditionally, temari were often given to children from their parents on New Year’s Day. Inside the tightly wrapped layers of each ball, the mother would have placed a small piece of paper with a goodwill wish for her child. The child would never be told what wish their mother had made while making the ball.

Historically, temari were constructed from the remnants of old kimono. Pieces of silk fabric would be wadded up to form a ball, and then the wad would be wrapped with strips of fabric. As time passed, traditional temari became an art, with the functional stitching becoming more decorative and detailed, until the balls displayed intricate embroidery.

Temari became an art and craft of the Japanese upper class and aristocracy, and noble women competed in creating increasingly beautiful and intricate objects.

Kashiwa mochi is a traditional Japanese sweet enjoyed on Children’s Day, celebrated on May 5th each year.

It consists of sweet rice cake filled with red bean paste and wrapped in a decorative oak leaf, serving as a symbol of prosperity and strength for children as they grow. The oak leaf, although not edible, imparts a subtle fragrance to the treat.

Records of Kashiwa Mochi can be traced back to the Edo period. People believed that oak trees were protected by the gods because they don’t fall until the new shoots start to sprout. This led people to believe that oak leaves represent the idea that parents will live to see their children grow and the prosperity of their ancestors will continue.

Today, Kashiwa Mochi remains a cherished delicacy enjoyed during the festive season.
