January 6, 1999, was a dark day in Sierra Leone's history. Rebel forces from the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) invaded Freetown, the capital city, unleashing a wave of violence, murder, r**e, and amputation on innocent civilians. The attack, which lasted for three weeks, resulted in the deaths of over 7,000 people, with many more displaced and injured
The rebels, who had been fighting the government since 1991, used brutal tactics, including using human shields, mass killings, and mutilations. They targeted civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, and even attacked hospitals and medical personnel
The invasion was eventually repelled by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Monitoring Group, led by Nigeria, but not before widespread destruction and trauma had been inflicted on the city and its people 🥹😭😭😭
