Carlton-Carew Farm is an agribusiness venture which commenced operations in 1987 and currently occupies a 30 acres approx.12.5 hectare freehold property, with opportunities for expansion, at Benguema in the Western Area Rural District of Sierra Leone, about 46km outside Freetown. A host of fruit trees, including cashew, avocado (pear), mango (local, Egyptian & Guinean varieties), orange and coconu
t, among others, are already being seasonally harvested, A perennial swamp land of about 8 acres is also being utilized for the cultivation of rice and vegetables. Incidentally, the first experiment of the West Africa hybrid Nerica rice variety was successfully carried out on the Farm by experts attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) in Sierra Leone. The Farm equally has a major potential in its Oil Palm plantation and newly-installed Oil Mill (Vi-Con Oil Mill) which has now begun extracting edible palm oil and palm kernel oil, as well as kernel cake (“banga” in local parlance) for animal feed. The entire farm land is well secured with over 200 Acacia trees demarcating the boundary, and are even matured enough to be used in the manufacturing of products like matches and toothpicks. The Farm is still in the stage of development and the Management is now looking for a viable partnership/joint venture to increase uptake, with the strategic aim of maximizing the full production, processing and marketing potentials of the Farm. Huge prospects exist for turn-key, capital-intensive agribusiness development projects on an industrial scale for the local and export markets, thus fetching much-needed foreign exchange and contributing a fair share to the country’s rising Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
