The Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on Hajj in Sierra Leone, Alhaji Muratada Sesay has confirmed that a total of 609 pilgrims from Sierra Leone will be participating in the 2024 Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

According to the Information Attache from Saudi Arabia Embassy, Abu Bakarr Bah confirmed that he was informed by the Chairman in an interview that the delegation comprised of 2 medical doctors, 1 pharmacist, 2 nurses, and 3 members of the Presidential Taskforce on Hajj.

He further said that among the 609 pilgrims, 60% are self sponsored, while 40% are beneficiaries of government scholarships.

Filmmaker and actor Idris Elba in an interview have advices Africans to tap into the global popularity of their creative industries to reap economic benefits.

He said “there’s a stigma attached to creative industries as not being serios business,” unlike other sectors such as mining or agriculture. But, he said, the arts could become a “significant driver of economic growth” if the sector’s value was accepted by policymakers.

“There is some key reframing that African countries need to adopt in order to really think about the business aspect of creativity,” said Elba, during our conversation which was hosted by telecoms company Africell and Sotheby’s auction house. He referred to creatives as the nucleus surrounded by a logistics network that creates jobs, from carpenters and make up artists, to sound engineers and lighting technicians.

The Electricity Distribution Supply Authority (EDSA) has issued a press release calling on Electricity Debtors to immediately made payment for their debts.

The press release stated that it’s the institution continued effort to increase revenue collection and improve operational efficiencies, as debtors should immediately make payment after receiving their bills to avoid disconnection and disruption of their services.

It was also stated that EDSA is actively investigating and analyzing its prepaid customers database to identify customers that may not have purchased electricity token for a period of at least three months or are purchasing electricity tokens in amounts that are not aligned with what is expected based on their installed electrical connection.

President Julius Maada Bio has addressed the Clean Cooking in Africa Summit, emphasising that it has seen a lack of progress because nearly four in five Africans still cook their meals over open fires and traditional stoves using polluting fuels.

He noted that the lack of access to clean cooking had dire consequences for health, the climate and gender equality, contributing to nearly half a million premature deaths of women and children annually in Africa alone.

The President, therefore, reiterated that the sole aim of the summit, organised by the International Energy Agency, IEA, is to elevate clean cooking on the global agenda, to mobilise financial commitments and to develop a roadmap of concrete action-oriented strategies.
