Suiting up for the bees 🐝🌱

We’ve been putting our locally made bee suits to the test here in Lungi, Sierra Leone as part of our growing sustainable beekeeping project. We’re proud to support local craftsmanship — but we’ve learned the hard way that these suits get *very* hot, with little airflow, making it tough to work safely and comfortably for long periods.

Working with bees requires focus, calm, and the right equipment — and right now, better protective suits would make a huge difference for our team on the ground.

We’re looking to upgrade to lighter, more breathable suits to keep everyone safe and able to continue the work effectively. If you’d like to support, we’d really appreciate it 🙏

On our recent visit to Lungi, we used our hand made bee suits for the very first time and had our first glimpse into one of the hives inhabited by our bee friends. They have created a very healthy brood which will be ready to harvest in the next few months! 🐝🌱 It's a-buzzy day at Dikie's Nectar 🐝🌱

We recently hosted a community workshop, empowering five new beekeepers to care for our hives.

Thanks to Abubakarr's expertise, we have relocated three hives for optimal conditions, and bees are already moving into 2 boxes!

During the training, our trainees learned:

Sustainable honey harvesting, Eco-friendly extraction, Smoking techniques, and Hive dynamics. There's more to beekeeping than meets the eye!

This week, we proudly nursed over 200 Moringa seeds — a beautiful collaboration with the amazing Lungi community.

We also planted 5 mango trees, 5 sweet sharp trees, 3 plump trees, and 3 cashew nut trees. Each one feels like planting a little hope for the generations after us. These trees will one day give shade, fruit, and life to the land and people around us. 🍃💛

And of course, our buzzing partners got plenty of love today! 🐝 We carefully supervised all our beehive boxes to make sure our bees stay healthy and thriving. Not all of our hives have residents yet, but that’s okay — we’re preparing them with extra honey and wax to attract new bee families. With more flowering plants blooming around the site, we’re confident more bees will soon find a home with us. 🌸💫

Every seed, every tree, every hive — it all adds up to something truly meaningful. Thank you for supporting us as we grow, heal, and re-green our little corner of this floating rock. 💚🌍

It’s such a wonder to watch seeds sprout into trees that will grow for generations to come. Just like It takes time to water the seeds of our own dreams, it takes a team of dreamers to make dreams come true! 🌱✨ Over 100 moringa saplings — lovingly nurtured these past months — found their place in the soil this weekend thanks to our incredible team on the ground, trekking through the thick of the bush on a hot, sunny afternoon and thanks to our supporters who helped make this vision a reality.

Moringa blossoms are a feast for bees, helping sustain the pollinators that keep our ecosystems alive. Each tree planted is more than a seedling: it is an offering to the beautiful, rich land we love, to the bees, to nature, to our community, and to Sidikie’s vibrant spirit that continues to sing with us through this journey. 💚🐝🌳 .moe
