Dear New Mom,
Things No One Told You...
“The baby is sleeping so much… but when I change the diaper, there's hardly any p*e. Is that normal?”
This is one of those things that can easily be missed.
Newborns can't tell you:
“Mummy, I'm thirsty.”
So sometimes, the diaper gives you a clue.
One of the simplest things you can watch is how often your baby is wetting diapers.
As feeding becomes established, a newborn should generally have around six or more wet diapers a day by about day 5–7.
So if your baby is suddenly having far fewer wet diapers than expected, especially together with:
👉 A very sleepy or difficult-to-wake baby
👉 A dry mouth
👉 Few or no tears when crying
👉 A sunken soft spot
…don't just assume baby is having a lazy diaper day.
These can be signs of dehydration and deserve medical attention.
And please don't give a young baby plain water to “replace lost fluids.”
Babies under 6 months should normally get their fluids from breast milk or formula, unless their healthcare provider advises otherwise.
Sometimes, the diaper can tell you something about how well your newborn is feeding.
With love,
Mummy P ❤️
