Somali Water

Many international and local organizations, private contractors, and communities are involved in the construction, rehabilitation, and upgrading of water points (ex., hand-dug wells, boreholes, barkeds, dams, and water pans). But serious failings in the quality of implementation and construction may impede these efforts, from which recovery is difficult without significant additional investment.
There are many examples in Somalia of water points providing water all year-round to satisfy the needs of local populations. However, there are also numerous examples of water points falling into a state of disrepair, or providing water on a seasonal basis only. Poor construction quality or construction at the wrong time of the year can undermine all efforts to keep water points working. The premise of this part of the guideline is that certain basic mandatory standards should be adhered to when implementing and constructing water sources. This will help to professionalize the water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector. Reasons for better water supply could be:
• The quality of the water from the existing source may be inadequate/unsafe
• The existing source of water may not function properly and needs to be improved/repaired
• The existing source may provide an inadequate quantity of water
• The existing source may be inconvenient, e.g. it is too far away from the home

Warmer than usual temperatures are expected over coastal, central, and north-western Kenya; western Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, western Uganda, northern parts of South Sudan, much of Ethiopia, northern Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Sudan.
Usual temperature conditions likely over eastern Kenya, southern Tanzania, central areas of South Sudan, areas in the southern border of Sudan, and few places in central and southern Ethiopia.
Cooler than usual temperatures likely over western Kenya, much of Tanzania, Uganda, southern parts of Somalia, southern and south-eastern Ethiopia, and southern parts of South Sudan.

Headlines: Wetter than usual conditions are expected over the southern and eastern parts of the region, while drier than usual conditions are expected over central Ethiopia.

Wetter than usual conditions are expected over much of Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda; western, south-western, and part of north-eastern Kenya; much of Somalia, Uganda, and the southern half of South Sudan.
Usual conditions are expected over the southern border of Tanzania, eastern and coastal Kenya, and southern and part of south-eastern Ethiopia.
Drier than usual conditions are expected over isolated areas in southern Tanzania, north-western Uganda, much of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and north-western Somalia.
