របៀបដាំខ្ទឹមស How to grow garlic
Growing Garlic is simple and can produce a good harvest if planted at the right time and cared for properly.
1. Choose healthy cloves
* Select large, healthy cloves from a quality garlic bulb.
* Do not use soft, damaged, or diseased cloves.
* Keep the papery skin on each clove.
2. Plant at the right time
* In cooler climates: plant in autumn or early winter.
* In tropical areas such as Cambodia: plant during the cooler months, typically from October to December, for best results.
3. Prepare the soil
* Use loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
* Garlic grows best in soil with a pH of about 6.0–7.0.
* Mix compost or well-rotted manure into the soil before planting.
4. Plant the cloves
* Place cloves with the pointed end facing upward.
* Plant them about:
* 3–5 cm deep
* 10–15 cm apart
* Leave 25–30 cm between rows.
5. Water regularly
* Keep the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged.
* Reduce watering when the leaves begin turning yellow near harvest time.
6. Control weeds
* Remove weeds regularly because they compete with garlic for nutrients and water.
* Mulching can help conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
7. Fertilize
* Apply compost or a nitrogen-rich fertilizer during early growth.
* Stop heavy fertilization once bulbs begin to form.
8. Harvest
* Garlic is usually ready in 4–6 months, depending on the variety and climate.
* Harvest when about one-third to one-half of the leaves turn yellow or brown.
* Carefully lift the bulbs from the soil rather than pulling them out.
9. Cure and store
* Dry harvested garlic in a shaded, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks.
* Store in a cool, dry place with good airflow.
Expected yield:
One garlic clove generally grows into one full garlic bulb containing several new cloves.
