Here’s my home-cooked food bento without rice. I made dark soy braised potatoes. Very simple dish. Cook minced pork in a pot with minced garlic. Add sliced potatoes. Add chicken stock and water to almost cover. Cook at low heat for 40min until thickened, stirring occasionally. If you want more flavour, you can add oyster sauce but i only want the dark soya sauce to be the focus. Sardines are canned sardines but i zhnged up with additional caramelised onions and some tomato ketchup. Veg is just a simple stirfry with garlic and oyster sauce. No rice.

So their signature one has everything which is quite ex. What happens if you go for the cheaper option? This one only has chicken chip, sunny side egg and braised cabbage. I seriously think when they franchise the brand away to hawker street, the standard cannot maintain. The chicken chop has been fried very long and left there. Not crispy. I personally find their curry different from the main shop also. Can’t say how different. Their cabbage is very tender and braised for long time. But i can’t taste anything special. Overall is meh at this the price point.

Decent snow ice that is durian flavoured. The dessert came with one big scoop of durian flesh, taro balls and jelly below. There is supposed to be matcha jelly, but they ran out and gave me matcha balls instead. Dessert is not too sweet. Very cold. The portion is big enought for 2 pax to share.

This dessert comprising of beancurd skin, barley and ginko nut is something my late grandfather used to make very well. We can never replicate his version. Because over time, the quality of the beancurd skin and barley has changed. The beancurd skin must be able to fragment but not completely dissolve. Using the stick blender would be cheating and you can tell the difference in texture. Some dessert stalls use soya bean milk. Traditionally, only beancurd skin and barley is used. Here’s my attempt to reproduce it. But i’m far from that vintage taste.

To be honest, i like Rong Kee more. It’s just two unit apart. But Rong Kee ain’t a morning person and when you can’t eat dim sum food at 8.30am, it’s annoying. For HFX, their LMK is decent. Has that aromatic smell of sesame oil. Wished they put some water chestnut inside their LMK for that textural contrast. Yam cake decent but nothing special. Soon kueh is also tradition and decent but lacks a surprise or finesse. But if you want dimsum early in the morning, this is the place at Clementi. No dine in, only dabao ever since covid hits.

Ok, i used the curry paste packet to make this. So it can never be 100% authentic. I made this with chicken, potatoes and of course, peanuts chunks. I added extra fish sauce, tamarind and palm sugar to zhng up the flavour. Had to finish fast because curry spoils quickly, even in the chiller.

There is a hawker center at raffles place if you didn’t know. Capita Spring building has a two floor hawker center to cater to the CBD crowd. Market street hawker center. This stall has insane Q, i gave up last time. Finally managed to tabao this. Rice nicely aromatic. Curry sauce not the thick kind that is jelat. Has good spices. Generous amount of chicken leg meat given its $6 and CBD. O seldom eat muslim food, but this hawker stall worth a try given the affordable price. Warning, their curry chicken sells out at 12.30pm at lunchtime.

Garlic chicken Miso is actually very easy to make. Combine miso with sake, mirin and a little sugar. Mix well and marinate bite size boneless chicken thigh overnight. Just pan-sear on medium heat until nicely golden. The miso will burn if high heat is used. Serve on a bed of short-grain japanese rice, lettuce and a nice sunny side egg and it’ll be a great lunch bento.

Located at Wisma Atria foodcourt, Nya Nya is a branch of Nya Nya at Bukit Timah Plaza. Nya Nya means grandmother. Helmed by Daryl (last pic), he’s 3rd gen boss of this outlet. The nonya laksa has good spices. Coconut milk just nice, not too jelat. I think more meat would be better; i find the laksa a bit… empty. The mango sago is very nice. Can taste the mango aroma. The sago is soft but has some texture. Their kueh is quite decent. Come say hi to his handsome boss at wisma atria.

So after eating the beef short ribs pasta, i decided to make my own version. Spotted some beef brisket with very nice marbling so i’m gonna turn it to ragu. Used pressure cooker to make this. Mirepoix, tomato paste, and brown stock is added into the pot after the beef brisket has been seared to develop colour. The fond is deglazed with wine and transferred to the pot. 45min on high pressure will do the trick. The brisket is shredded and returned into the pot. After you have cooked the pasta to 2min before al dente, the pasta is added to a pot with the ragu and tossed well. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese.
