Founded by Giuseppe Mori in 1974 and now developed alongside his son Iacopo, the estate sits on the cooler northern side of Montalcino at 400 meters above sea level, where sandy mineral-rich soils and north-facing vineyards just below the town walls produce Brunello of uncommon lift and precision.
In a denomination that can lean toward richness and power, Il Marroneto speaks in a more classical register: soaring Sangiovese aromatics, vivid acidity, fine chalky tannins, and a mineral, savory core that is deeply expressive even in youth yet built above all for graceful, long evolution in bottle. Alessandro considers himself a vignaiolo rather than a manipulator, someone who sees the grapes as the culmination of his work and whose absolute priority begins in the vineyard, where health, attentiveness, and total respect for the land are non-negotiable. Things cannot be corrected in the w**ery, he says, and that conviction shapes every decision made at Il Marroneto, from vine to bottle.
Their flagship Madonna delle Grazie is sourced from the estate’s oldest and most historic parcel adjacent to a chapel dating back to the 1200s, a single vineyard selection of 100% Sangiovese from marine sand and mineral-rich soils that produces a w**e of extraordinary complexity and tertiary depth. The 2020 vintage, marked by a stable dry climate and perfectly balanced ripening, yielded w**es of great elegance with a confident stride, broad texture, and sweet tannic maturity that enhances depth without sacrificing freshness. While Tuscany offers no shortage of famous names, the most compelling estates are often those whose integrity and ambition have elevated them into the front rank without ever losing sight of tradition.
