In September 1987, a sixty-year-old botanist named Hugh Wilson stood on 109 hectares of ruined farmland on New Zealand's Banks Peninsula and told his neighbours he would not touch the gorse — not spray it, not burn it, not bulldoze it, not cut it. The Akaroa Mail printed a letter calling him a fool and a dreamer within weeks. Thirty-nine years later, that land is 1,700 hectares of native forest with 35 bird species and 47 waterfalls that run year-round. And the "noxious w**d" that was supposed to bankrupt the whole peninsula? It's almost entirely gone. It killed itself.
