The OSS welcomed a high-level Mauritanian delegation in Tunis to prepare for the launch of PRAGOA, a project aimed at strengthening the resilience of agropastoral and oasis communities in Ziyara and Dhaya, in the Adrar region, to the impacts of climate change.
Funded with US$10 million from the Adaptation Fund, PRAGOA will support concrete solutions to improve water management, restore land and ecosystems, promote climate-smart agriculture and create local economic opportunities. Particular attention will be given to women and young people.
As an Adaptation Fund-accredited Regional Implementing Entity, the OSS is supporting Mauritania in implementing this funding, connecting the country’s priorities and community needs with climate finance resources.
Through PRAGOA, the OSS is helping turn climate finance into concrete action to strengthen the resilience of territories and communities.

As part of the project aimed at strengthening Eritrea’s institutional, human and technical capacities for , OSS conducted a technical consultation mission in on 21–22 September 2026.
The mission resulted in the consolidation of sectoral priorities and stakeholder inputs required to advance the Country Programme towards national validation and finalization. Consultations with national institutions identified key priorities in energy, food security, water resources management, land restoration and the resilience of agricultural systems, while strengthening coordination across sectors.
These outcomes provide a concrete foundation for Eritrea’s first GCF Country Programme, which will serve as a strategic framework for prioritizing future climate investments and connecting national needs with climate finance opportunities.
The next step will be a national validation workshop to review the proposed Programme, gather final feedback and strengthen national ownership... www.oss-online.org/en/readiness.er

08/09/2026

OSS Welcomes the New United Nations Resolution on World Map Representation

The Sahara and Sahel Observatory welcomes with interest the new United Nations resolution on the representation of the world on maps.

On 4 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution aimed at promoting map representations that more accurately reflect the actual areas of continents and regions around the world.

Led by Togo, with the support of African States, the initiative encourages, in particular, the use of Equal Earth-type projections, which provide a more accurate representation of the actual proportions of territories. The resolution was adopted by 164 votes, with 6 abstentions and 1 vote against.

This decision is particularly important for Africa.

The Mercator projection, originally developed in the 16th century to meet navigation needs, significantly distorts the size of landmasses as they move away from the Equator. As a result, it gives a visual perception that differs considerably from Africa’s actual size: the African continent is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland, yet the two appear to be of comparable size on a Mercator map.

But beyond cartography, this resolution reminds us of an essential reality: the way we represent territories influences how we perceive, understand and value them.
For Africa, representing its territory more accurately also means better conveying its vastness, diversity, and the importance of its natural resources and landscapes.

At the Sahara and Sahel Observatory, knowledge and representation of territories are at the heart of our work. Geospatial data, Earth observation, mapping, and the monitoring of water resources, land and ecosystems: measuring to better understand, understanding to better decide and act.

This resolution therefore sends a strong signal in favour of a fairer representation of our world.

Africa has not changed in size.
What is changing is the way we see its size.
