When in Turkey, you have to drink the Turkish national drink called Raki, which is made from anise root. Somewhat similar to the taste of absynthe without so much aftertaste if you’ve tried absynthe. If not, think of black licorice alcohol, though the taste of alcohol isn’t as up-front as with absynthe in my opinion. Here’s what Grok says about it:

Beylerbeyi Teragold Rakı is a premium Turkish rakı (triple-distilled from 100% fresh grapes/suma, with anise, no added sugar, and aged in clay pots then oak barrels). It is consistently listed at 45% ABV.

A nice drink while watching a beautiful sunset at this very cool restaurant in the Kas harbor. I won’t say I love it but I don’t dislike it, either. I’d drink it again, perhaps with a fruit and cheese tray. Try it and let me know what you think!

Happy Mother's Day, y'all! 🍺

Ducked into this brewery taproom for SOMx Brewing just around the corner from the last stop. There's more outdoor seating than indoor seating, and seating for only about 50 people total. Music is playing, but it needs to be louder for better ambiance.

Along the lines of the "Wait, where am I?" from my last post, we saw the sign in the last picture on the walk here. Paris, TX, is representing in Istanbul!

And The ShadMan Drinketh is representing H-town in Istanbul (see sticker picture)! I bought these stickers a month ago and brought them on this trip, and I completely forgot to bring them until today, so this is sticker number one in the world for me.

When in….wait, where am I? 🤣

Cool little side street off the bustling Istiklal Street with all the crowds, shops and restaurants. Lots of little bars in this area, and 4 or 5 Irish Pubs together in a little cluster here. We grabbed a stool at one, as I was thirsty for a Guinness. Great place to relax and people-watch! 😎

First Turkish brewery of the trip. Spent the last 3 hours on a sunset cruise (see pics) on the Bosphorous Strait that runs through the middle of Istanbul and separates Europe from Asia (Istanbul spans both continents).

Two cruise ships are in port next to us so I figured this place would be ridiculous. It’s crowded but not as packed as I thought it would be. Very large restaurant and taproom for Torch Brewing. They also have a wine and liquor menu for non-beer drinkers. We opted for an upstairs terrace table for a cool view of the cruise ships. Music pumping at a good volume for an upbeat atmosphere.

Second stop of the night. Not exactly a brewery, but a taphouse with exclusive rights to sell Lion beers, which are Sri Lankan, similar to the way Hofbrau has exclusive contracts for many pubs in Germany where only their beers can be sold. Since they have a few varieties of Lion I haven’t seen anywhere else, I’m going to refer to this one as a brewery tap room with remote brewing, since Sri Lanka has no actual breweries with taprooms on site anywhere in the country. This is as close as it gets!

Mindy asked for the fixings on the side for the burger and you can see how it came. 🤣 Burger was decent, definitely not great by American standards. We had the pineapple fritter for dessert and it was awesome!

A long, sweaty walk from our hotel inside the old fort town, we finally made it to this spot inside a 5-star waterfront hotel to try their arrack tasting flight. Arrack is a locally produced Sri Lankan fermented coconut sap (from the flower of the coconut tree) liquor, which can be drank straight or mixed into various cocktail styles, and many locals drink it shandy style. It tastes much like a whiskey, but a bit lighter at around 30-32% alcohol, and there is no coconut sweetness like you’d get with Malibu rum (what I expected). Very surprised how whiskey-like and drinkable it is! This flight comes with some local nibbles and costs 6000LAKR (~$18). My understanding is the Ceylon Arrack is globally distributed and likely available in the USA. I’m going to look for it at Specs and Total Wine.

The only brewery we’ll get a chance to visit in Bangalore, the craft beer capital of India. Craft beer has become huge in India and they do it big here in Bangalore, with literally a dozen breweries that exceed 2000 in people capacity. One of them even holds 7000 from what I’m told. I can’t think of any in the US I’ve ever seen that exceed 1000 capacity. Many have waterfalls inside them, koi ponds, trees, etc. This one has a banyan tree and a koi pond, and the place seems to extend on forever, then you notice there is also an upstairs. 😳

Open air venue with full food and liquor menu and 8 house-brewed beers on tap today. I started with the sampler, which is very generous, for 600 rupees, or slightly over $6. We also ordered some chicken biryani and some assorted dumplings/momos. All the food was amazingly good here, as we were told by my team at work it would be. Definitely come here if ever in Bangalore!

A brewery in the courtyard of an upscale mall in Mumbai, 24K has five beers on tap currently, though their brewery definitely has capacity for many more. It’s early evening on a Saturday and there are only a few other people here aside from us, so I’m sure they just haven’t scaled up yet since they are a new brewery.

Full food menu and, with seating for around 200 inside and more outside in the courtyard, this is a large taproom by India standards. They also have wines, cocktails and a decent liquor selection for non-beer drinkers.

Enjoyed a cool tour of SJ Studios, a Bollywood film studio, and got to stand on set while they were filming four different shows, including one that is at the height of popularity in India currently. Decided it was time to have a beer or three and some lunch afterwards, and this one is nearby.

A large taproom of highly rated Independence Brewing, this place can seat around 200 and is bustling today, even with some seating still available. American pop music playing, but barely audible over the din of 50 people talking at once. Friendly service, if a bit slow. Unlike others I’ve been to, I’d say this one feels understaffed for the crowd today.

They have a full food menu and around eight (if I counted correctly) of their house-brewed beers on tap. We tried the shrimp pad Thai and some chicken tikka poppers and all was good.

Had one more hour to kill on the way to the airport, so I found this one on the way. Gateway, named for the Gateway of India I visited earlier today, is a popular local craft beer and this is one of their taprooms in Mumbai. Full food menu in this taproom and the food looks good but I ate at the previous one. Background pop music playing and a bustling ambiance in this relatively crowded mid-size taproom.

This one happened to be somewhat on my way from sightseeing in South Mumbai toward the airport to pick up my travel partner for the rest of the trip. Kadak has quite a few house-brewed beers and ciders and is a proper taproom setup kind of place with good music playing for ambiance and seating for a few dozen people. I also had the chicken peli-peli, which had good flavor and a good spice level.
