WHAT IS VEGAN WINE?

You might think this is a strange question. Wine is made from grapes, so how can it NOT be vegan?

Well, all young wines are hazy (not clear) and will have tiny molecules floating around. These are natural and not harmful. And if you wait long enough, most wines will become clear on their own and those small particles will sink to the bottom.

But most producers will help this process using “fining agents”. These will attract the molecules like a magnet, creating larger bits that will be easier to remove. Most of these fining agents come from animals, for example egg white or gelatin. After they have done their job, they will be taken out of the wine, together with the molecules. The wine will be vegetarian (it doesn’t contain an animal product), but because an animal product was used to produce it, it will not be vegan.

For vegan wines the producer will use a non-animal product, like bentonite (clay) or activated charcoal, or will just wait for nature to run its course.
