A little tour of our stingless bee ( Melipona trinitatis) apiary off our porch in our retired tree house! Inspection, feeding, some video of the brood cells within the hive. We did a split of these hives in May, just before the rainy season, so we are still feeding them until they get strong after which they will forage on their own. Our long term plan is to have hives for sale but we dont have any ready at the moment.

Finally, a tiny harvest of our Mayan purple corn...new seed for the next generation!

Height of the dry season, lots of nectar and pollen around and our stingless bee hive has hatched another queen. She is on her mating flight with the swarm around her. Once she returns to the hive she will begin laying eggs and will never fly again. Once stingless bees set up a hive they never leave it!

The rainy season is around the corner, the first wave of rain is supposed to come in 6 days. We thought we had made it . Unfortunately someone illegally lit a fire on a neighbouring piece of land and it quickly spread towards ours. We checked on it a few times and it looked like it had extinguished itself as it reached our fire breaks.

Unfortunately it jumped a section and quickly spread in some of the dry mulch along some of our beds . We know it was deliberately lit as it started on both sides of the road simultaneously on a day that was not windy.

We lost a significant amount of production from our beds that were just beginning to flower and we lost some of our irrigation lines which we replaced this morning

Dont light fires!
