Baba the baddie.
a bonafide modern Renaissance man -
lofi aficionado, culture collector, lifelong inventor and design connoisseur, the occasional model, a vanguard and revered pioneer in Taiwan’s advertising world, an eloquent everyday poet with penchant for calligraphy tucked in one neat package of boundless curiosity dipped in pure silliness.

our deepest bond might be that we are two native problem solvers in a family of “problem makers” - when we’re together we just GET each other, and in the last few years we became so peaceful in each others presence, so effortless that it’s a rare quiet luxury.

just before brain cancer took hold, in those last himself days we exchanged ideas on spontaneous healing and quantum physics, as much of that livened him, it livened me.

one recent exchange I’ll forever remember - 「因為我是現代人!」 when I asked him how he knew the phrase 「刷存」 (“swiping existence” - to show up nearby someone to see if they cared, a modern Taiwanese man indeed)

Until now I hadn’t known I could hold as deep of an empathy for anyone as I do for him, so unendingly. Both of us being Aquarians we beat to our own drums so independently, yet in these past years we found that they were the same drums after all - especially when I began to express myself in the culinary arts specializing in Taiwanese authenticities, he was MOST proud of me - after all, he hand-calligraphied part of my brand monogram, during one of the hardest times of our lives - me at my lowest, jobless, burnt out, discovered my own long term illness and his, taking care of him in his first bout of hospitalization, having just had a porterhouse sized of intestinal cancer removed from him, all of this during the early pandemic years when the world collapsed. this man saw me for who I was, who I could be, and I of him. And finally, after all the years of my thinking he’d preferred my siblings over me, I now KNOW otherwise.

Idk how many days we have left, none of us are god and neither is the hospital who keeps trying to prove otherwise - we are still us and we keep trucking on. cancer be damned.

earlier last week upon arrival to The Motherland, the collective we received this “Preparedness Booklet” in the mailbox, and to be honest, I had to let it sit on the dining table for several days, before I could muster up the courage to sift through the information. bc even the cover title alone, made the idea of Taiwan once again attacked and attempted for occupation, all too real to face right then.

in all the years spent in Taiwan and coming back as often as life would allow, I’d never met something so literal as this. ofc the possibility of being invaded or put into war presented itself daily and more often than not, numerous air threats a day. but something printed en masse ? officially penned by the government ? with a foreword directly from the president himself ? not quite. wordings like this in the past usually verbally uttered, now in neon orange, cartoon illustrated and bold (yet cutesy) bubble font, now glare back at us as a VERY real inevitability - yet this level of “preparedness” frightened me.

eventually the jump scare settled and the earnestness from president Lai’s foreword, and the tone of the booklet as a united people and nation, landed as a sort of bravery; it made me want to be brave too - to stand up for our country in ways I’d never quite allowed myself to imagine - and maybe none of us to this level of practical practice - to what lengths will we go to defend our Beloved ? after all, the mission that began everything that’s been done via GaMaDiam Goods, the countless journeys and pouring my energy to convey to the world exactly who Taiwan is, has been my way of showing up for Her, defending Her in a sense, but also flaunting all the glory She is the world not yet know.

the parts that particular stood out that’s very present day are the repeated messaging about 假新聞 - fake news, ie news of surrender, and several means of obtaining real pertinent information, if ever without modern technology. the bar is set here - news of surrender is NEVER real, and check the sources - any Chinese-produced app is vulnerable to infiltration.
