Most people think sealing black tea is enough to keep it fresh. But a recent study from the Taiwan Tea Research Bulletin proves otherwise.
Researchers tested three packaging methods on small-leaf black tea: deoxidizer heat-sealing, plain heat-sealing, and clip-sealing. After three months, sensory quality and volatile compounds diverged significantly.
Deoxidizer heat-sealing preserved aroma compounds best by blocking both oxygen and moisture. Plain heat-sealing came second. Clip-sealing—which most households actually use—was the weakest, allowing gradual aroma loss without obvious signs.
The takeaway: for black tea, "sealed" is not the same as "protected." Good packaging manages oxygen, moisture, and aroma escape together.
So next time you enjoy a black tea, consider not just the roast or variety—but how it was sealed.
