Ise Jingu Must-Visit Wagashi Shop with ! Akafuku Honten | 300+ Years of Akafuku Mochi Tradition
Established in 1707 (Hoei 4) near Ise Grand Shrine’s Inner Shrine, Akafuku began as a teahouse welcoming pilgrims. For over 300 years, it has preserved the essence of Ise’s hospitality.
The signature “Akafuku Mochi” features freshly pounded mochi topped with silky smooth koshi-an red bean paste. The design mimics the Isuzu River: three lines in the paste represent its clear flow, while the white mochi symbolizes riverbed pebbles. Its gentle sweetness and soft texture provide perfect refreshment after shrine visits.
At the main store, watch skilled “Mochi-ire san” craftsmen at work, upholding time-honored methods. They also offer the special “ ” (limited-edition wagashi seals available only at each shop’s honten), adding a collector’s joy to your wagashi journey.
In summer, try the chilled “Akafuku Ice” or the monthly 1st “Tsuitachi Mochi.” More than just a sweet, Akafuku embodies Ise’s sacred culture and Japanese omotenashi spirit — ideal as a souvenir or heartfelt gift.
