Sermon: From Ordinary to Extraordinary- by Rev. AGABA MOSES
Text: John 2:1-11
Introduction: Good afternoon, brothers and sisters in Christ! Today, we’re going to dive into one of the most remarkable events in the ministry of Jesus—a moment when He took something ordinary and made it extraordinary. This story, found in John 2:1-11, is known as the miracle at the wedding in Cana. It’s not just a tale of water turned into wine; it’s a profound demonstration of Christ’s power to transform our lives from the mundane to the miraculous.
1. The Ordinary Setting: The story begins at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Weddings in those days were significant social events, much like they are today. They symbolized joy, unity, and the beginning of something new. But for all their significance, weddings were also ordinary, routine events that happened regularly.
This setting is crucial because it shows us that Jesus is not just concerned with the extraordinary moments of our lives but also with our daily, ordinary experiences. He meets us where we are, in the everyday places, and works within our ordinary circumstances.
2. The Problem: At this wedding, a problem arises—the wine runs out. In the culture of the time, this was more than just a social faux pas; it was a potential disaster. Running out of wine could cause embarrassment and shame for the host family.
In our lives, we too encounter moments when the wine runs out—when we face challenges, feel empty, or find ourselves in situations beyond our control. These moments may seem ordinary, but they are opportunities for God to do something extraordinary.
3. The Faithful Request: Mary, the mother of Jesus, notices the problem and turns to Him, saying, "They have no wine." Her statement is simple, yet it carries a profound trust in Jesus' ability to intervene. Mary didn’t know what Jesus would do, but she had faith that He could do something.
This teaches us the importance of bringing our needs to Jesus, even when we don’t know what the solution might be. It’s a call to have faith in His power to transform our situations, no matter how ordinary or dire they may seem.
4. The Extraordinary Response: Jesus instructs the servants to fill six stone water jars with water. These jars, typically used for ceremonial washing, held ordinary water. But when the servants obeyed Jesus’ command and drew out the water, it had been miraculously transformed into wine—wine of the highest quality.
Here we see the crux of our message: Jesus takes what is ordinary and makes it extraordinary. The transformation of water into wine is a symbol of the transformative power of Christ in our lives. He can take our ordinary, everyday experiences, and through His divine touch, turn them into something extraordinary.
5. The Glory Revealed: The result of this miracle was not just that the wedding celebration continued; it was that Jesus’ glory was revealed, and His disciples believed in Him. The transformation brought about by Jesus wasn’t just about the wine; it was about revealing His identity and His power.
In our lives, when Jesus transforms our ordinary into extraordinary, it’s not just for our benefit. It’s a testimony to His glory. Our lives become a reflection of His power and grace, drawing others to believe in Him.
Conclusion: As we reflect on this passage, let us remember that Jesus is still in the business of transformation. He is still turning water into wine in our lives—taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. Whatever situation you may find yourself in today, whether you feel like the wine has run out or you’re stuck in the ordinary, bring it to Jesus. Trust in His power to transform, to take what is mundane and turn it into a testimony of His glory.
May we leave here today with renewed faith in Jesus' ability to take our ordinary lives and make them extraordinary for His purpose and His glory. Amen.
