The regional pig industry is rapidly changing:-

- You can nolonger use village boars
- Quality put on market determines price

Where resources are inadquate, specialization is the way.

In the video, I discuss:-
- Farrow to Finish
- Farrow to Wean &
- Fattening

How can a pig farmer with limited resouces stay competitive in an industry rapidly growing and likely to eliminate those that are:-

- Producing poor quality pork
- Not efficient enough to profit with increasing input prices.

Watch & Learn

Pig farming needs specialisation for farmers to be efficient.- Farrowing to wean- Farrowing to finish- Fattening

HOW TO SELECT THE BEST PIG FOR YOUR FARM

The impact of the investment in quality pig genetics on a farm is not judged by the physical characteristics of the pig including size, color, height etc. even though they may be important. It is determined by the percentage of economic value the herd (not a single pig) delivers to the pig farmer. The herd should not just look nice but must be of the right weight to age etc.

All physical characteristics are as a result of unseen abilities naturally present in a pig or group of pigs. When looking at economic value delivered by particular genetics, we evaluate performance of the farm population kept under similar standard conditions. Even in pigs of lower genetic level, there are individual pigs that excel better than others. Therefore the uniformity of the group but not an individual pig is key!

The price of animal feed has been going up and there is no hope of going down due to changes in climate that is causing change in seasons. Therefore any commercial farm that will remain profitable focuses on efficiency of genetics kept and technologies applied. These may cost a little more but focus is on the level of economic benefit delivered compared to cheaper options.

Lets discuss the 3 main qualities that influence economic value in a group of pigs intended for slaughter:-

1. Reduced time to market. Forexample, the offspring sired between Nuclèus Pietrain NN/PN³ and Sèrènis reachs 100kg of live body weight in about 140 days. This is from the normal 170 - 180 days known. The farmer saves between 40 to 30 days. If a group of 100 pigs were under finishing and each pig consumes 2kg per day and each kilogram of finisher feed cost 1,500/- (UGX):-

Total Feed saved: 100 × 2 × 40 = 8,000kg

Total cash saved: 8,000 × 1,500/- = 12,000,000/-.

2. Reduced feed required: The Nuclèus Pietrain NN/PN³ requires an average of 2kg of feed to gain 1kg of live body weight. This is from the normal 3 to 3.5 kilograms commonly fed for a pug to gain 1kg of live body weight. If this happens for the last 56 days before market, the farmer saves between 1 to 1.5kg of feed.

Total feed saved:- 1× 56 × 100 = 5,600kg

Total cash saved: 5,600 × 15,00 = 8,400,000/-

3. More weight per carcass: The Nuclèus Pietrain NN/PN³ of 100kg live body weight produce a carcass weighing 75kg+ with a lean meat percentage (LMP) of above 68%. Information from our local export standard abattoir - Mbizzi indicates majority of pigs slaughtered yield 60% carcass and LMP of below 50%.This means, a pig farmer using advanced genetics like Nuclèus Pietrain NN/PN³ and Sèrènis offspring has 15kg more per carcass and recieves a premium price from a processor due to his pigs high LMP.

15 × 100 × 12,000 = 18,000,000/-

The best mother for your slaughter pigs available in Africa today is the Nucleus Sèrènis produced in East Africa.

This exploits economic benefit more when bred with any of the Nuclèus commercial boars, Pietrain NN/PN³, Vigor and Duroc. Certified multiplication farms for the Nuclèus Sèrènis and commercial boars are available in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

PROPER USE OF THE Q FEED 30% & 5% CONCETRATES IN REPRODUCTIVE HERD.

QF Pig Concentrate 30% is formulated to drive rapid growth and high feed efficiency.
For this reason, feeding quantities must be carefully controlled when the concentrate is used for:

- Gestating sows, and
- Gilts intended for breeding,

to avoid excessive body condition, reproductive stress, and long-term performance issues.

Where possible, we strongly recommend using QF Pig Concentrate 5% when formulating diets for breeding and gestating animals, as it allows better control of nutrient density while supporting healthy reproduction and longevity.

The QF 30% Pig concetrate is more ideal for making feeds for the commercial herd and a lactation diet.

Grab both QF 30% and 5% concetrates on Easter discount. Call us today:-

THE CBCs ARE NOW CONNECTED

All Central Breeding Centers (CBCs) under the Micro-Breeding Framework in East Africa are now fully integrated with the Nucléus Pig Genetics selection database in France.

This connection enables:
- Real-time performance evaluation against international genetic benchmarks

- Early identification and elimination of underperforming animals

- Data-driven selection decisions to continuously improve herd quality

- Standardized genetic progress across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Through the use of Smart Sow (GGP management) and Smart Pig (GP & F1 performance tracking), the framework guarantees:

👍🏻 Full traceability
👍🏻 Controlled genetic multiplication
👍🏻Protection against genetic drift and adulteration
👍🏻Sustainable improvement in farm productivity and profitability

This marks a major step toward delivering world-class pig genetics, locally produced for Africa.

This comes with alot of opportunities in the pig breeding business & access to quality genetics. Lets talk.

THE Q FEED PIG CONCETRATES,

- QF 30% (Pig A) 200,000/- (50kg bag)
- QF 5% (Pig B) 20,5000/- (50kg bag)

The Q Feed Pig 30% concetrate (Pig A) has proved to be the best premium protein concetrate on the Uganda market today.

It induces performanc e not only in piglets but also a poorly performing herd.

You mix the concetrate with only broken maize and maize bran to make a well balanced diet for your pigs of all age groups or reproductive levels.

Since few ingredients are required, there is very limited chances for error in as far as quality or homogenious mixing of final.feed is concerned. This makes the QF 30% Pig concetrate (Pig A) ithe best option fpr delicate stages:-
- Starter feed
- Early grower
- Lactation

You cannever go wrong!

Then transfer the herd to the Q Feed 5% pig concetrate (Pig B). You need Soycake and Sunflower alongside broken maize and bran to make diets for different categories of pigs.

THE THREAT POSED BY POOR GENETICS & NUTRITION TO FARM PROFITABILITY

The two most expensive variables in pig farming are nutrition and genetics. Genetics ranks highly because farmers must invest in a structured plan that ensures continuous genetic improvement and timely replacement of worn-out or poor-performing animals with quality replacement gilts.

These two factors are interdependent:- success is not possible when one is strong and the other is weak.

Poor-quality genetics and nutrition impact pig farmers in two major ways:

1. Increased Cost of Production per Finisher

This occurs due to:
- Low Average Daily Gain (ADG) of pigs
- Poor nutrient balance (especially protein and energy) in feed

As a result, pigs take longer to reach market weight, increasing feed costs and reducing efficiency.

2. Poor Quality Pork

This is characterized by:

- Thick backfat layers
- Low meat-to-fat (and bone) ratio
- Underweight carcasses

Main causes include:
- Use of genetically fatty or low-performing pigs
- Poorly balanced nutrition (protein-energy imbalance)

All the above factors lead to longer feeding periods, meaning pigs stay on the farm longer than necessary further increasing costs and reducing turnover.

To avoid these challenges, farmers must use both high-quality genetics and well-balanced nutrition.

Modern genetic lines such as Nucleus Pietrain NN/PN³, Vigor, and Duroc commercial boars are known for:

- High carcass yield
- Efficient feed conversion
- Reduced backfat thickness
- High meat-to-fat ratio

The best results are achieved when these boars are used to breed, SÉRÉNIS (F1 parent line) — produced from a cross between Nuclèus Large White × Landrace.

Even the best genetics will underperform without proper feeding.

For example:
- Using Q Feed 30% and 5% concentrate diets enables pigs to fully express their genetic potential, resulting in:

- Faster growth
- Better carcass quality
- Improved feed efficiency

Genetics and nutrition also influence carcass uniformity, which is critical for market value.

However, inconsistency can also arise from:
- Switching feed programs
- Poor overall management practices
