Here are three important tips for keeping turkeys:

Provide Adequate Space and Shelter: Turkeys need plenty of space to roam and forage. A common recommendation is at least 2-3 square feet per turkey inside a coop and 10 square feet per turkey outside. Ensure they have a shelter that protects them from extreme weather, such as a well-ventilated coop with bedding for warmth in winter, and shade during hot summer days. A secure fence or pen will keep them safe from predators like foxes, coyotes, and hawks.

Offer a Balanced Diet: Turkeys require a well-rounded diet for healthy growth and egg production (for hens). Commercial turkey feed provides the necessary nutrients, but you can supplement their diet with grains, vegetables, and kitchen scraps. Fresh water should always be available. Avoid feeding turkeys anything moldy or processed, as these can cause health issues.

Monitor Health and Prevent Diseases: Regularly check turkeys for signs of illness or parasites, such as lethargy, poor appetite, or unusual droppings. Provide them with clean bedding to reduce the risk of diseases like coccidiosis. You may need to vaccinate your turkeys depending on the conditions in your area, and keep their living area clean to minimize bacterial buildup and pests.
