Should you build or buy your chicken coop/tractor? It may seem easier to buy a pre-made coop, but they always seem to be lacking in something! Size - most coops or tractors already made only support a handful of chicken. I wanted the space to be big, I didn't want a tractor that would be immovable by myself. We constructed ours with as little wood as possible and utilized a tarp roof to keep it lightweight compared to its size.Height - I wanted to be able to move around in the tractor without hunching over or crawling around. It's about 6 feet at the peak 👍🏻
Versatility - all the roosting bars and nesting boxes are removable so the tractor can be used for a brooder, meat bird tractor, dog kennel, compost building, greenhouse (if tarp were changed to plastic) etc. Cost - this tractor comes out to about 680 dollars including the cost of wheels. To buy a pre-made moveable coop of the same size would be much more expensive, not to mention heavier and harder to move. So it was a no brainer! We designed and built two of these chicken tractors about 3 years ago, and they are still going strong! 🔥
