Sometimes a beer is just a beer. Sometimes it's an opportunity to be part of something bigger.
General Order No. 3 is part of a statewide Juneteenth collaboration bringing breweries together in recognition of freedom, resilience, and community.
The beer takes its name from General Order No. 3, the document issued in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, informing enslaved people that they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, that moment is commemorated as Juneteenth.
When we were invited to participate, we were honored to join the effort and support the Nonprofit Professionals of Color Collective. For every draft pour and every four-pack sold, we will donate $1 directly to the organization.
While the recipe was provided by our friends at Oakflower as part of the collaboration, we approached this beer the same way we approach a Director's Cut release: by pulling out all the stops.
We started by knocking out directly onto Citra Incognito before layering in a massive dry hop of Citra, Citra Cryo, Nelson Sauvin, and the special MJF Hop Blend. Created in partnership with the Michael James Jackson Foundation, the blend features equal parts Citra®, Citra LUPOMAX®, Elani®, and El Dorado®, amplifying bright citrus, tropical fruit, and expressive hop character. For every pound sold, John I. Haas donates $5 to the Michael James Jackson Foundation to help support scholarships and educational opportunities within the brewing industry.
The result is a beer that is both purposeful and packed with flavor. At 7.1% ABV, this one is a straight juice bomb bursting with notes of mango, citrus, pineapple, and ripe tropical fruit.
The label itself was designed by John and incorporates imagery from the original General Order No. 3 document preserved by the U.S. National Archives, connecting the beer directly to the history it seeks to honor.
A special thank you to Mike () for joining us on brew day and helping bring this project to life.
Beer has always been at its best when it brings people together. We're proud to be part of this collaboration and excited to share General Order No. 3 with all of you.
