Breeding with shipped semen:
I am sure that breeding farms and stallion stations know what Industry Standard Doses are for cooled shipped, frozen and farm dose semen. But do you? It is becoming increasingly important for you as a mare owner to educate yourself on just what a "dose" of semen should be. What is the minimum number of sperm/cells for a single dose of shipped cooled? The answer is 500 million, BUT they need to SHIP, 1 BIllion per dose. A farm dose or on site dose would be 500 million because they do not need to ship it. Ask the farm "how does this stallion ship" and listen closely. Some stallion's semen will live a long time, two, three days or even more, but just as many need to have that semen inseminated within 24 hours or less. Many times when I have asked that question they will answer that they prefer to do counter to counter or "fly It' because that stallion does not ship well with overnite services like Fedex. Ask your vet how the motility was when he checked it after AI. Almost all vets will hold back a few drops to look at in under a microscope and get a visual. The number that comes on the stallion report is sometimes a lot higher than what you actually receive, but sometimes it is pretty darn good. I have received several shipments in the last couple of years with NO stallion report in the box or else a very brief report that didn't tell me much. I recently called about a stud at a well know station that I have used before and like. The office manager gave me actual numbers of his stallion breeding reports for the last week and she told me they don't send less than 1 billion in a single dose. They don't send a half dose of 500 million, which has become commonplace. I sent in a contract. If you don't know the questions to ask, you are setting yourself up for failure. Do not assume they will automatically send you an Industry standard dose. I have made that mistake, in thinking that they will be fair and honest and that they are professionals, unfortunately that is not always the case. I understand that every time a stallion collects it may not always be up to par, I understand that they have many orders to fill and may not have a good collection or simply too many orders, but if they cannot send a standard MINIMUM dose then they need to notify you before shipping. Period. If they can send you a deep horn dose it has to be of a certain volume and concentration and you should be made aware of that ahead of time. Maybe you would chose to have them send frozen. Regardless, if there are issues with the semen quality they need to give you a heads up. We are buying breedings not lottery tickets. I just lost about $4,300 in breeding fee, chute fee, counter to counter fees, shipping fee and Flushing fees because of very poor communication from the stallion manger/owner and a sub standard shipped semen dose with poor motility. It was for ET on an aged mare. I had her timed and primed and then I get a horrible dose of semen. I won't get that money back. They charged me $875 for shipping on that dose. They knew better, because as I said, they know what a standard shipped dose should be. #blindsided #creshaaaron #aaronranch

Breeding with Shipped Cooled Semen. Don't overlook the importance of not just selecting that wonderful champion stallion but you are also selecting a stallion station ASK QUESTIONS!
In order to insure that you will receive a breeding dose of equine shipped cooled semen, the farm needs to send 1 billion per dose because it is estimated that only 500 million may arrive and that is a minimum breeding dose. This year I have run into unscrupulous mangers sending 500 million or less in a dose which means I probably only received 250 million in that dose. And then only a single dose. You may have seen the stallion owner/manger bragging on FB about sending out 17 boxes in one day on one stallion. How do you think they do that? When your vet opens the box PLEASE ask him for his evaluation of the shipment and PLEASE give feedback to the shipper. Getting a dose of 25% of a standard breeding dose that is almost void of swimmers is not what you contracted for. And shame on those same shippers for bragging about numbers of boxes shipped. I want to hear about numbers of pregnancies'. I wasn't buying a box, I was buying a breeding to your stallion. Since posting yesterday, I have received numerous texts and messages. It seems this has become a serious and unfortunately, a commonplace issue. From now on I will ask specific questions about "breeding doses" that farm strives to send and what it draws the line on and considered to be not a viable dose. I do have a couple farms that have always been fantastic. The Ranch Equine is wonderful for one. I know that there are others. but if you see the stallion owner bragging about big numbers of boxes shipped on one stallion in one day, beware. I think it has become standard practice for some of these farms, because no one says anything. We all act like we don't have the right to question a bad dose. Really?! Speak up, get your vet to write a letter if need be. These farms that are not practicing good management need to be held accountable. Speak up.

This is my trainer, Adam Blackmon in Merritt, BC on my two year old stud colt, PePe Merada. Adam and his wife Jess are a great team, and I never worry about my horses being rushed in training or not being taken care of. PePe will actually be two in two weeks from when this video is made. As you can see, he is doing very well. I have a Travelin Jonez foal coming that will be a maternal sibling to PePe.

NRCHA SALE OBSERVATION: Im my opinion, the NRCHA Futurity Sale should have been called the NCHA/NRCHA Perferrred Sale. Because it was stacked with NCHA sires and dams. I would bet money that the majority of buyers were "cutters" and the majority of sellers were "cutters". You might say who cares. Well for one the straight cow horse sires took a beating. The trouble with this sale as it stands now, is it that the stats from this sale will be tabulated as "Cow Horse Sales", but most of them will never go down the fence. Think about that.

I have two fillies for sale BY this guy. No, not Chris Dawson! Silly. The other guy, Travelin Jonez. Full sisters, out of a great Dual Smart Rey mare, NRCHA producer, whose dam was the 1997 Res, NCHA Open Fut. Champ. I'll post a photo of the two year old in the comments. Her name is Bridget Jonez. Which ever one sells, I'll keep the other. They are gorgeous and athletic and very intelligent. They are almost identical.

Susie, aka Delights Starla, is at it again! She is making her new owner happy! Susie was raised by Stillwater Quarter Horses, went on to win the MRCHF non pro Futurity and numerous other titles earning around $12k in two years at smaller shows. This is her new owner and I am guessing her first show with her. The dam, CS Equalizer Delight, of this filly has been a producer of AQHA, NRHA and NRCHA show horses. I currently have a bay yearling filly out of her by Rockin W. This could well be the last foal out of this mare as she is getting aged. PM me for details. MARE POWER.

Anne Marion - AQHA

Oh so sad to hear this. She was a great horsewoman. My husband was one of her small animal vets and she gave me a Free Breeding to Paddys Irish Whiskey for my Shining Spark mare, some 13 years ago. That mare is named after Miss Anne, "Annies Free Whiskey". It was one of the nicest things anyone in horse industry has ever done for me. RIP Miss Anne.

Condolences to the family of American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Anne Marion, who died February 12.

Who do you think YOU are? Dreaming too big for what you're capable of. Yes, you. With your rusty old bumper pull, your $500 horse, and your 3 part time jobs...

You think you can visualize yourself running down that Thomas and Mack alley or competing in the NRCHA snaffle bit futurity? The arena where tears of victory are shed, next to the parking lot where gazillion dollar rigs are parked? You think the announcer would ever holler your name into the mic during a performance?

You know; your horse is too slow, your truck is too old, your funds are too low, your arena is too muddy, and your goals are too big.

Your family is too tired, your time is too limited, your work schedule too unforgiving, and your heart is too hopeful.

Who would ever think that YOU could be capable of reaching your dreams with a situation like YOURS?

Wait...I think I know a few people.

Scamper was from a feedlot. Fallon broke her neck. Vickie Carter was a 60 year old rookie. Sherry lost her husband. Taylor Jacob lost her home. And you are probably among them because you've lost your mind; thinking you CAN'T.

Because these women...lost it all too. They turned their can'ts into cans and dream into plans. They turned regrettable situations into remarkable recovery. They turned down barrels into darn buckles. They turned failure into freedom.

So who you do you think you are? Dreaming too big, with eyes too wide and a mind too imaginative. A champion?

Only if you want to be.

That's all it takes. To believe you can. After losing everything and feeling like you have nothing. Believing. YOU. can.

So go ahead girlfriend...I know what you are working with, and it's probably not a whole lot. But winners believe they can go big with what little they have. And losers think they can't because of how much they don't have.

Get on your horse. Study up. Saddle up. Cowgirl Up. Do you.

Because champions aren't born, and they aren't made by someone else. They just believe in themselves.

Sincerely,

Someone who knew you could do it the whole time!

Two years ago I was about to call Tim Unzicker to tell him I had a prospect that I thought would fit him. He called me. Dawn and Tim came to my place, I was so excited, I talked non stop, until they said sold! LOL! Here there are. Montana Reined Cow Horse Futurity, 72 on the Fence, total score 213. They were first place in the MT bred category, 4th in the Open. Two years ago Toni Harms won the non pro futurity on one I bred, there wasn't a MT bred class at that time but her mare was eligible for Stallion Stakes and I think she got first in that. The next year they were reserve in the Derby and I think she again won the SS money that time as well.Moral to the story, if you're in MT and looking for a quality MT bred prospect, come see me at Stillwater Quarter Horses in Absarokee, MT. I have a few available and I have a good picker, I can match people and horses pretty good.I have a two year old available that can win the MT Open Futurity for you next year, really, I do.

Hey check this out! Blind Sided is proving to be a sire. I have lovely two year old Blind Sided filly out of a Doc's Hickory daughter (with 22K NRCHA), in training with Zane Davis. Looking for a 2020 Futurity Prospect, Here ya go!

Blind Sidedโ€™s first foal crop impresses with Bush Whacked, the SRCHA Downunder Horsemanship Pre-Futurity Open Futurity Champion with Jay McLaughlin. The pair scored a composite of 440.

08/10/2019

I have a few prospects available. Here is what I have available:

1) 2019 Bay filly by Travelin Jonez out of Dual Smart Rey daughter. Second dam was 1997 NCHA Reserve Open Futurity Champ. She looks like her full sister, a yearling, that I have a sale pending on for this fall. Elegant. This one will go fast too. She is very agreeable and sweet. Will have size.

2) 2019 Bay Filly by Rockin W and out of my good mare CS Equalizer Delight ( earner and producer of NRHA, NRCHA and AQHA show horses), coon tail and roan in the body. Compact, short backed, can really use herself. She is going to be mighty in a smaller package. She will be able to go a lot of different directions as has all the produce from BOTH parents. No one trick ponies on this pedigree!

3) 2017 Sorrel Filly by Blind Sided out of a good Doc's Hickory daughter with 22K NRCHA. This filly is a quality prospect for Snaffle Bit 2020. She is in training with the Zane Davis. The real deal. I am raising the price as she progresses, better get her now. If I didn't have her sister with Zane this one would NOT be for sale.
