We are bowled over by this news. We will now be able to complete our creamery and sell our amazing milk directly to our wonderful community (to whom we extend enormous gratitude). A long time in the making and finally, thanks to this grant, a light at the end of the tunnel!
Thank you to Ulster County Government for supporting small farms in a meaningful way. And thank you to those who wrote letters of support: RVGA Rondout Valley Growers Association, Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund, NY State Cheese Council and our Town Supervisor. We are honored and look forward to getting started!

Ulster County has awarded $586K to nine local farms to support sustainable upgrades, improve climate resilience, and strengthen the regional food economy.

l've been holding this in for a long time, but now I can finally share...thank you culture magazine: the word on cheese for including me on your 2025 Hot List. This is one of the most unexpected and exciting things to happen to me in a very long time! So many words I want to say, but l'll stick with these: humbled, honored, & heart-full. To be amongst these amazing people doesn't seem real. And to see two of my Milkmaids team there with me is so unbelievably special.💚

The photo of me and Birdy was taken in April by Sarah Farrell. I detest photos of me, but she's talented and I'm very grateful to see myself through her lens.

You can find the full story at Culture Magazine’s page, and read about the entire Hot List!🔥

Say hello to our new mobile chicken coop!🐓
We cannot say “thank you” enough to the for the microgrant that enabled us to purchase this great addition to our farm. Head to the link in our bio and their website to see the good work they do, and to donate. Your contribution goes directly to supporting farms like ours.💕
Our new coop is lightweight and easy for both of us to haul around the fields. Our meat birds will now be pasture raised, something many of our customers desire.🥳
And our American Bresse chickens will get a turn, too…between meat bird harvests they can enjoy a summer vacation on the nice green grass!🌱🐛
Chicken manure is high in nitrogen; it will go onto our newly-cut hay fields directly from the chickens. Next step: praying the rain stops long enough so we can actually cut the hay!🙏🏼

Our Wagyu calving season started this morning during a beautiful sunrise.🌅
We’ve started this spring feeling tired. This last month has been filled with administrative things that don’t fill our cup. Not going to lie: it has been hard. And this week a social media “influencer” decided to put her focus on Wagyu as the new evil in our food supply. It angered us because she has nearly a million followers, many of whom hear her as a truthful voice. Every single thing she said with authority was false.👎🏻
We don’t like administrative work or social media. We prefer to be outside together, with the beef cows, or milking our Holsteins, or collecting eggs, or making hay, or anything that’s real and tangible and authentic.💚
This morning we were reminded of why we do what we do. What you see are just the bonuses: raising delicious, healthful food for our community, working outside in a gorgeous place, the sunrises and sunsets we watch together….The actual reason we farm is this: it’s the most deeply soul-filling, satisfying work on this earth.🌎
This morning Bart just happened to be wearing a shirt that says “Your food comes from farm families like mine.” That “influencer” has power to hurt all the small producers of really amazing food. She said Wagyu cattle are fed candy to make all the marbled fat. That’s just fake news.📰
We felt like laughing this morning, so Cozy’s beautiful, smart little calf (nursing on her own a mere 20 minutes after birth!) is named Candy. After she was born Bart said “look! She has a lollipop in her mouth!”🤭
Candy will grow up here, raised on her mother’s milk, and then the grass of the pasture and hay we make. Welcome to Hilltop Farm Candy! May your life be extra sweet indeed.🍭🍬
