Spotlight Apple Variety: Ashmead’s Kernel

Looks are deceiving for this ugly looking Apple, as the taste is exceptional!

APPEARANCE
Small to medium, lumpy, green-gold with a heavy russet coat. Not grown for looks.

FLAVOR & TEXTURE
Explosive sweet-sharp flavor — orange, pear, and w**e notes. One of the most intense dessert apples.

HARVEST TIME
Typically October, however they are ripe and ready for picking at our Orchard now!

BEST USES
Fresh eating. Also great for c***r, juice, and cooking. A taster’s apple. Their flavor deepens in storage

DID YOU KNOW?
This variety was raised by Dr. Ashmead in Gloucester, England, about 1700 (making this Apple 300+ years old!). Still a c***r-maker’s favorite.

Come pick your own here at our Orchard!

Thank you, St. Thomas! 🍎
We loved hosting your students, such a delightful bunch! It was a joy watching them learn about apples, pick a sunflower, and enjoy donuts & c***r.
Thanks for a wonderful morning — hope to see you again soon!

Spotlight Apple Variety: Cox’s Orange Pippin

Appearance:
Medium size with an orange-red flush over gold and a bit of russet around the stem.

Flavor & Texture:
Complex: sweet-sharp, spicy, floral, and orange-like. Crisp, juicy, citrus, and aromatic. A true connoisseur’s apple.

Harvest:
October. Best when fully ripe and after a short rest.

Best Uses:
Fresh eating. Also excellent for juice and dessert. Not the easiest pie apple.

DID YOU KNOW?
• Raised ~1825 by retired brewer and amateur horticulturist Richard Cox at Colnbrook Lawn, Buckinghamshire, England. Commercial introduction ~1850.
• Long reputed to be a Ribston Pippin seedling. 2022 high-density SNP genotyping confirmed parents are Margil × Rosemary Russet. (Ribston turns out to be a sibling via the Margil line rather than a direct parent.)
• Diploid. Genetic grandparent/parent to a ridiculous number of modern dessert apples (Alkmene, Ellison’s Orange, Fiesta, and many others).
• One of the classic “flavor benchmark” cultivars that still sets the standard against which aromatic English-style apples are judged.

Thanks for getting nerdy with us!
