Green Wagon Farm is a small-scale vegetable venture in Ada, Michigan, growing eleven acres of diverse vegetables and herbs. We’re a verdant patchwork of humble lessons and grand visions as well as a collection of friends, who plant and harvest and eat together—friends who have become family to each other. We are currently expanding our seasonal production to feed our community all year round. With

farmer tans and dirty hands, we pray over our food and our labor, insistent upon producing the most beautiful food in the most ecological way. We love farming, and we are happy to be part of the agrarian renaissance in West Michigan, finding community at the West Michigan Grower’s Group and as part of the Fulton St. Our farm is located in Ada, twenty minutes from the center of Grand Rapids, just south of the Gerald R. You can find our produce at restaurants across the region, a few local groceries, our Fulton St. Farmers Market stand, or at your local CSA pickup. Feel free to contact us with questions or to schedule a visit: we’d love to be your farmers. Together, we’ll work to feed the soil and build a deeper earth, one that is more nuanced and more generous (for more information, visit us at greenwagonfarm.com)

A spontaneous decision from Chad and Heather to cook lunch over a fire (in a pot we insistently refer to as “the cauldron”) after a high harvest yield of our bulk carrots. It had us eating lunch camping-style last Wednesday, revealing a final piece of the harvest process that’s even more beautiful than stacks of gleaming orange – a steaming pot of vegetable beef soup, and a hungry crew to eat it with 🥕🍲✨

Most of us spend much of our time on the production end of vegetables, it’s satisfying to see them in the context of the market. The vibrant displays at all the booths and the general energy that comes with a farmers market serves as a reminder of the value of our work. Our Market Crew gets to experience this enthusiasm every weekend, but sometimes it’s nice when our other team members see it as well (pictured here - their visit to the market this past weekend!).

There’s plenty of value in production alone – the beauty of the morning sun, the camaraderie among the crew, the fulfillment in watching a delicate seedling develop into a robust, harvestable crop. But if production is the front end of farming, it’s the back end of farming that contains our ultimate ‘why’: the exchange between food producer and consumer, the direct interaction between Green Wagon and the West Michigan community.

Happy September from us to you! 🌞

“Don’t quit in August” is a farming adage that’s gained some traction on the farm in recent years. It means that despite nearing a breaking point with feelings of burnout, hold out for a little longer – because a lighter workload is just around the corner.

There is still plenty of laughter and good conversation (and singing) among the crew, but often we can’t help but let our faces take on zombie-like expressions, eyes glazed over, as we go about our well-worn routines.

Despite mental and physical tiredness, our morale as a crew feels high – each one of us gave a thumbs-up rating of the week in our Friday meeting. So we’re far from running on fumes. If anything, we’re running on the fuel of home-cooked lunches and melon popsicles.

Happy August!

Just a few shots from last week, most being of our *early* potato harvest where we harvested ~3,000 lbs! It’s strange to think that we’re already halfway through July. And even stranger that we’re halfway through the main growing season. At this point, the summer weeks are starting to look alike – more fine tuning than making major changes. It can feel odd to establish systems as nitty-gritty as whose job it is to write on and erase a whiteboard, but we’re finding that bringing clarity to even the smallest details can have a big impact on the smoothness of our days 💪🏼

As Michigan farmers, we feel honored to be growing nourishing food for our loyal CSA members year-round, and have worked hard to expand our indoor growing spaces and staff in order to do so. Our CSA programs have helped shape the farm into what it is today, and we feel passionate about a path forward of focusing on our Year Round CSA. With this said, we've made the careful decision to discontinue our Summer CSA and work towards expanding our Year Round shares and experience.

Please join us in building this deep connection between farmer and consumer. Members of our Year Round CSA are able to enjoy 12 months of locally grown vegetables, and yes, that still means lots of fresh greens even in the coldest Michigan months! 🌱Sign up now to reserve your spot to begin in June (space is limited). Signing up does not mean a commitment for a full year. Our members pay month-to-month and are able to cancel their membership at any time. This year-round crew right here is grateful and excited to continue down this path with our loyal CSA members!
