We're doing so far so good with the heat. July babies are a bit smaller than their cooler weather counterparts, but not problematically so. I did cull those litters very hard to make it easier on moms. Only kept 4 to grow from two litters.

Fall fair entry deadlines are coming up fast! Frustrating to have to do entries while simply trying to keep them alive but that's just how it goes. Arkansas-Oklahoma State Fair, and Tulsa State Fair are both due 8/28/26 the OKC State Fair isn't due til 9/7/26!

Well the 10 day forecast looks... disgusting. The lows are mid 80s highs 103-112.

I keep my rabbits in a "garage in a box" tarp barn, it's light colored and I added black plastic sheeting in the inside to help block UV, then added two large shade tarps that wrap around both ends and the side that gets sun. That's been helping a TON. I did raise the shade tarp up on the ends so the fans can pull unobstructed air. It opens east-west and we often get a decent breeze.

I wish we could be under tree shade but that wasn't an option. I did get a willow to grow on one corner and it's starting to be large enough to provide useful shade. (It's also grown over one leg of the barn making it even less likely to blow away lol)

I use water bowls which are fantastic for helping keep them more hydrated and letting them cool off if needed. BUT do have to watch for fungus especially on the Rex fur.

They did great on Tuesday when it was absolutely gross. I do plan to offer electrolytes during the coming week, when the lows are still that high they have a harder time. Will have carriers prepped in case anyone needs to come inside too.

Your first signs of heat stress will be faster than normal breathing. If you see rabbits with wet mouths and open mouth breathing they need to be cooled ASAP! Keep their water fresh and cool, and feeding in the evening let's them have the longest time to eat in the cool.

We're getting to the fine tuning part of culling down for summer and for fall breeding, at least for the older rabbits. I like everything that's left at least in some aspect. But now we get to see whether I have 5 of functionally the same rabbit (a back up is good, but my program is small) or nice animals that just aren't going to fit with what I have, or whatever.

These three are all related. Left and center share a sire, rights sire was a half sibling and left and rights mothers are daughters of center (from different sires, but father and son lol) so understandably they're fairly similar in a lot of ways. Left simply doesn't hold up to the other two and I don't actually need 3 similar broken does. When I really think about it I love center and right despite their imperfections but left...I loved her mother and she's not her mom.

Looking at the rear view, left has a very much narrower loin, and her proportion of base width to loin is even more off. Still have lots of work to do, but there is progress. Left will be culled, too many other small potential issues.

The other simple but awesome "hack" I have is a dustpan. You do not actually have to pick up the entire tray of p**p and shavings at once if you use stackers. You can grab a bucket/tub/wheelbarrow and use the dustpan to scoop trays, also makes it easier to spot clean.

I know how important it is to bleach water bowls regularly but I struggle to actually do it consistently...but not anymore!! Bleach Wipes work great! Just dump, wipe down, rinse, and refill! And if you don't want to buy bleach wipes you can always make them with rags and a resealable container.

This is an exceedingly well loved taxidermy beaver in a children's discovery area at a museum. Most of the guard hairs have been petted off but you can see some over my finger. The undercoat is dense and super soft. You may be wondering why I felt y'all needed to see it... Did you know that one of the reasons Rex became so popular was their similarity to shaved beaver hides which were very popular but obviously harder to source than rabbits. Beavers are in the Genus Castor, which is how our lovely Castors got their name.

Such a nice feeling having a full feed barrel, even if it doesn't last long. But with 20ish off the feed bill it'll stay...

This is a doe that made it through the first round of cuts, her sire is a purchase so keeping 4/5 to see how they develop as it's definitely a different growth pattern than mine. The one culled was incredibly narrow.

This guy just gets nicer every time I pull him out. I really planned to cull him because I didn't actually "need" another Brindled buck, and I don't love his lower rufus opal color but he keeps impressing me.

Hes going to be a big guy, as a young kit he reminded me more of a French Lop baby with his giant feet and huge chunky self (he looked even bigger as his mom was fostering Himi babies that don't have the growth rate of my main herd, yet). He's pictured at ~13 weeks.

Windfalls Pampas Cat is the only one that I think will move forward to the next round of growing out from the Firefly x Leadwort litter. She's a Brindled Opal. Still not in love, but she's the best compliment for the Brindled buck, and the least problematic of her littermates. Decent balance, decent width, decent bone.
