Not looking forward to making the choice, but 1-2 of these ladies will not get to stay. I'm trying to get down to 10 Rex Does, max...which sounds like a decent amount until you go to make the decisions lol. These are the weaned, but not proven does I'm growing, born late October to mid February.

Couple of JR bucks I'm growing out... Definitely both parts bucks but I'm interested to see how they develop. Mid February babies so still in a bit of a gangly stage. Windfalls Robot (GC Windfalls Dalmatian x GC Windfalls Galileo) and Windfalls/AIR Mock Trial (AIR Card x AIR Kelvin).

This litter evaluation illustrates a point very well imo. This litter is out of two Grand Champion animals (half sibs actually), the dams SR leg came from a 2nd RIS over like 500 animals, so both nice animals... But only 3/10 made my first cut in this litter. Just because they're out of great stock doesn't mean the cross was a good one, or that they're going to work well together. Neither parent is pinched in the HQ but man did we get a bunch of kits that were...

#1 Broken Black Otter Doe 1.08
Not a bad doe, narrower based than I was expecting from this cross but we'll see how she looks at 6 weeks.
#2 Broken Black Otter Doe 1.06
This is my favorite, lovely short body, nice depth, well defined peak.
#3 Broken Chocolate Otter Buck 1.0
Terminal Cull. Now for the train wrecks... This guy is so bad... extremely pinched, flat and narrow shouldered.
#4 Broken Chocolate Otter Buck .15
Terminal Cull. Flat, long, narrow and very pinched
#5 Broken Chocolate Otter Doe 1.03
Terminal Cull, slightly better than the two bucks before her but still pinched, light b***d, flat and narrow
#6 Black Otter Buck 1.04
Terminal Cull... This guy had a bad case of the "slidey butt" where when you run your hands down his HQ your hand hits his hocks when it should hit the table. His topline is also... Creative.
#7 Black Otter Buck 1.06
Terminal Cull. Terribly pinched
#8 Black Otter Buck 1.04
Terminal Cull... Utterly awful, this guy is flat, long, terribly pinched and narrow at the base.
#9 Black Otter Doe 1.04
Terminal Cull. Pinched, light bone, not a bad topline at all, would have grown her longer if not for the pinching.
#10 Chocolate Otter Doe 1.03
Growing for now, smaller than I'd like but going from 10 to 3 should give her no excuse not to catch up a bunch at our next evaluation.

Finally actually posting litter Evaluation #2 for the Jelly litter and fosters. This is thier 6 week eval, 2nd for the Jelly kits, first for the fosters. Ended up culling two fosters, one of which wasn't a terrible buck by any means and I actually really liked parts of him but had no chance of staying in my herd. One of those harder choices but I can only grow out so many bucks (and there were 5 in this group lol) #8 is getting a slide by this week. He took losing his mom harder than his brothers and had loose stools that set him back a bit, he's still growing though so we'll give him til 8 weeks. Fosters have F in front of the number. Pics and weights taken 5/18.

F #1. Broken Black Otter 2.0
Terminal Cull. Very narrow, long shoulder, overall flat and long.
F #2 Broken Black Otter 2.05
Terminal Cull. Much better version of #2 but still way too long in the shoulder. Perfectly functional animal though.
F #3 Lilac Otter Buck 2.0
Passed round 1, like the depth of body, and shortness of body, looking forward to seeing him develop. Would like more width of shoulder.
#4 Castor Buck 2.02
Liking the width of shoulder in this buck, I'd like more depth but I do really appreciate the string smooth curvature. Since width of shoulder is something we struggle with he's growing out. He's leaning badly in the rearview.
#5 Castor Doe 2.05
She was suffering from some serious "don't wannas" but I like how she's grown, well see what week 8 has in store.
#6 Opal Doe 2.02
Liking the depth but wish I could have her swap shoulders with the other Opal doe. Hers are too narrow.
#7 Opal Doe 2.0
This is the one I'm growing just to see how the fur changes, I really appreciate her width of shoulder and width overall... But she's so flat!
F #8 Chocolate Otter Buck 1.08
Getting a slide by this week. He's rather thin, but growing and I have faith he will catch up. His bone structure isn't bad at all, and he was a quite promising 3 week old.

Another Litter Evaluation. This is the 4 week Evaluation for the KOs KQH1 aka Selene x Hoppy Days Chicago litter. 4 bucks, 2 does. Everyone did well on weights, smallest is 1.04, largest is 1.09 average of 1.06.

Will terminal cull 3/6 this week. I donate this age culls to a wildlife rehabber, helps us both out a lot and let's me focus on only the kits that might be worth keeping or selling.

#1 Black Otter Buck 1.04
Terminal Cull, long narrow shoulders, and lacks depth
#2 Black Otter Doe 1.09
Currently growing out... When posed she doesn't feel pinched and she was being very difficult to get that one handed rear foot shot so I'm not certain it's particularly accurate lol. Love the size.
#3 Broken Black Otter Doe 1.04
Terminal Cull, long narrow shoulders, flat, very narrow base, just a mess
#4 Broken Black Buck 1.06
Really like this guy!! Lovely peak, compact body, shorter shoulder.
#5 Broken Black Buck 1.07
Currently growing him out... He looked better a few days ago and was not feeling remotely like sitting still. (Another one that doesn't feel pinched, but was being silly)We'll look at him again in 2 weeks. I do like his rearview.
#6 Black Buck 1.07
Terminal Cull, flat, long narrow shoulder, light bone.

So one I'm super excited by...and it's a buck which is exactly what I needed :). Then two I'll hold on to for now, well see how they look in two weeks. These all carry dilute, and the doe carries self. 50% chance of carrying chocolate as well ;).

Windfalls KissCurl (Hoppy Days Chicago x Windfalls Pavlov) will be looking for a new address. I really like her, but I'm cutting down to a max of 10 Rex does... And I'm keeping her sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother so I think I can let her go (plus I have a repeat litter of 12 in the box lol). Fantastic fur for a youngster, currently incorrect undercolor but that may or may not improve, beautiful surface color and Rufus though. 6lbs 12oz at 15.5 weeks old (1-22-21).

25*2 is her asking price, fully pedigreed. She's shown once with good comments and traveled well.

One of the many cool things about rabbits is they foster other does babies really easily. I always try to breed 2 does at least at the same time, which comes in handy really often lol. This week Windfalls Mousepad had 3, a few days later (she was 3 days overdue) Windfalls Pavlov had 12... Since rabbits are awesome I can just move 4 from Pavlovs litter into Mousepads box and now we have a litter of 7 and a litter of 8. I moved the "dense" colored kits from Pavlovs litter since all of Mousepads are dilute.

I also have a doe that just took 4 4 weeks olds to go with her 4 week olds after they lost thier mom. The first one she just sniffed, the next 3 we're Brokens (which are obviously not hers) so she gave me a look like...."you know those aren't mine right?" but she gave them a lick anyways and is caring for them just like her own. Not all does will take them at that age, but Jelly is a doll.

05/10/2021

This is going to be a pretty long post, so bear (bun?) with me. I see a lot of people asking how you sort potential keepers from culls and at what age, so I thought since I was sorting round 1 on Jelly's litter I might as well show the process.

She has 10, and they turned 4 weeks old today. They all made my minimum weight at this age, which is 1.0lbs. They range from 1.02 to 1.07 for an average of 1lb 4 oz. I do my first terminal cull at 4 weeks, and anything culled at this size is donated to a local wildlife rehabber.

Each kit is weighed, posed, and evaluated, and I'll come back in two weeks and do it again. They're just in order of who I grabbed first lol.

At this age I'm pulling out mostly rabbits that are pinched in the HQ, flat or have issues I know won't change like the terrible peak and slide off on #3, or the Diamond shape from the top view on #5/#10. I'm not worried about ugly fur at this point... That will change A LOT as they develop. I also consider bone at this age, but unless it's extreme I don't cull on it...yet.

#1- 1.04 Opal Doe
Made the first cut. Nice wide parallel base, promising topline. Nice progression of width from front to back.
#2 1.02 Opal Buck
Terminal Cull. Badly pinched in the HQ and very narrow in the shoulder. Also one of the smaller bucks.
#3 1.05 Castor Buck
Terminal Cull. Terrible peak placement, slides off very fast, and very low in the hip. Pinched in the HQ as well.
#4 1.02 Castor Doe
Terminal Cull. Pinched in the HQ. I can appreciate her short body length, but she's never going to have the depth of body or correct HQ. Very prominent guard hairs to the fur, but those may have molted out.
#5 1.05 Opal Buck
Terminal Cull. Diamond shaped from the top view, so the HQ and shoulder are narrow and the midsection is the widest... That's a poor shape for any meat animal regardless of species. The #1 doe is a -better- example of what the top view should look like. He's also very flat and too long proportionally.
#6 1.02 Castor Doe
Terminal Cull. Flat, not likely to be anything I'd want to keep or pass on.
#7 1.07 Castor Buck
Made the first cut, nice wide parallel base, has potential... Gets a bit too long but we'll look at him again.
#8 1.03 Opal Doe
This one made the cut but only because I want to see if the protruding guard hairs improve with age in this cross. She does have nice hip height but is highly unlikely to make later culls.
#9 1.07 Castor Doe
Made the first cut. This is my current favorite in the litter.
#10 1.03 Castor Doe
Terminal Cull. Very light bone, diamond shaped from the top view.

So terminal culled 6, growing 4 (3 D 1 B) for now. (Jelly is still going to be raising 8...I lost a doe with similar age kits and she's taking 4 of her bucks for now). This is actually the second time Jelly has fostered for that particular doe lol. I'll do another cull in two weeks, but it will probably be focused hardest on the fosters as I let them slide on this week's cull.

Last set of pics is the parents, taken today.

Hopefully you made it through the whole post...and found something of value :).

Had the opportunity to make a good Silver Marten vs Black Otter graphic. Thought y'all might enjoy. Feel free to save it if it's helpful to you.

There is only one visible gene different between these two litter mates. Both are ataB-D-E- but the Silver Marten is cchdc and the Black Otter is Cc. (White x Black Otter cross)

Windfalls Jazz (Windfalls Mousepad x Hoppy Days Chicago) joins the group of Jrs in the potential keeper pile. 10 weeks, just entering her ugly phase. This doe feels really good and while not extreme in any area I believe she's inching closer to the goals.

Windfalls Blacklist

Windfalls NSA x Hoppy Days Chicago

This brick of a doe is joining the potential keeper JR pile. She will require test breeding for Chinchilla before she officially joins the keepers... And we've got a lot of growing to do between now and then. She's entering the "uglies" so we're going to ignore her for a bit lol.

These are unweaned kits, but shoulder length is one of those things that only gets worse with age. These are 3/4 siblings. The Broken only made it past the last two culls because she has the best rearview in that litter and her mom is exceptionally stingy with the does (She has had 3 all buck litters lol).

The Black Otter is still not perfect by any means, just closer to ideal than the Broken.

Quick post on sexing kits. There is no on purpose audio just barn noises.

I flip them over in my left arm like a baby, hold and gently push down the tail with my left index finger then use my thumb to expose the ge****ls. The kit in the video is a buck, about 7 weeks. The still photos in the comments are around 5 weeks.

Posed some of the 6 week olds that made it through the first cull. There are 9 left in this age group. They'll have another cull at 8 weeks (probably 1/2 to 1/3rd won't make the 8 week cut), then I'll probably grow to 16 weeks before I decide who is going or staying. Lots of flaws still, but some things that'll be fun to show, add into my herd and share.

The next group will be even more fun to sort because there are 6 litters that are only 10 days apart at most and they're all half sibs (or more). Nearly all Brokens lol.

Couple of Palomino does I'm growing out. They're 10 weeks. Looking forward to getting them to a few shows :).

I have a couple "soapbox" things to address. These are not directed at anyone specific, or intended to hurt feelings.

#1- I breed for show, meat and pelts. I do not breed for or try to market pets. But that doesn't mean I think any less of responsible pet breeders or owners, or those of you interested purely in raising for meat. All aspects of our industry are important and valuable. So long as you are giving your rabbits appropriate care and meeting thier needs you have carte blanche to run your program however you want IMO. If you need advice hit me up, and if I see something that's dangerous for the rabbit or will cause you a huge headache down the road I will say something. But otherwise have fun, and respect each other's viewpoints.

#2 Yes, the breed is Rex. Not medium Rex, not standard Rex, just Rex. I do understand why you feel the need to clarify though, I have been offered Mini Rex when I was looking for Rex, or had potential buyers interested in buying my Rex only to back out because they thought I was selling Mini Rex (despite my ad saying 8-10lb mature weight lol). The correct breed name is Rex, but if you message me looking for standard Rex I may cringe a little but I'm still going to answer your questions because it's a minor thing. I will however give you a heads up because lots of breeders get understandably frustrated over this issue.

Hi there! I was wondering if I could ask you a question about eye color? I tried to message you but it won't seem to work. 😊
