About two weeks of development for Windfalls Bad Moon Rising, she's almost a SR and starting to pull together. Still just a short term brood doe but I've had fun watching her grow.

One of the things I really am hoping to do is let more of the promising kits develop and earmark and prioritize more cage space for grow outs. I know I've eaten rabbits that would have benefitted my program because I was cramped for space.

Nail trimming is an important, but often neglected part of rabbit husbandry. We attempt to check nails monthly. Some rabbits will need it more or less often.
I flip the rabbits over in my lap to trim nails, holding them like a baby with their head in the crook of my arm. We use cat nail clippers.
You want to avoid clipping the quick, or the live part of the nail, it's very easy to see in a white nail (the pink section), harder in darker nails, and cannot be seen in black nails so just go slow. If you trim the black nail and the inside still looks chalky, you can trim more, when it starts looking solid grey/black/purple it's time to stop.

If you happen to quick one, it's not the end of the world. Blood stop powder, cornstarch, flour or even cobwebs will stop the bleeding.

Just going to brag on this superstar... obviously these 3 aren't her natural kits. But Windfalls Kobold raised not one, but two litters that weren't hers this last season. Both times I weaned her natural kits at 8 to 10 weeks and gave her a box of 10-14 day olds and both times she took them. Most does will foster similarly aged kits with no issue but this was extra special. She'll have a forever home with me (she also produces lovely rabbits on her own).

Windfalls Bad Moon Rising, a brood doe joining the team soon, she's just shy of 5 months and I expect she won't be "Wow" for a bit (her mom's kits generally look thier best as young SRs). Her fur isn't good enough to join the show team but shell be paired with GC Windfalls Galileo who has excellent fur.

This rabbit should have been a taco a while ago but I've been busy lol. But it's a great example of atrocious foreleg structure. In the Standard of Perfection it says something like "medium length limbs that dispel any look of raciness" (I'm paraphrasing) and this guy fails that completely lol. A correctly proportioned limb should line up with the front toes under the eye.

8/9 week old baby, they had a rough start. Lost their mom at almost 2 weeks, partially bottle-fed until my superstar Kobold decided to foster them. 2/3 of the survivors look promising, and the other may surprise me as it continues to bulk up. But I really like this little one.

Several times recently I've seen people cutting down and citing "drama in the rabbit world" as part of the reason. That really makes me sad. We need to do better and we can do better.

One of the things I have always loved about showing rabbits is the focus is where it should be: on the rabbits. We step back from the judges table because we don't matter at this point in the equation, it's all what that rabbit is at this moment, how it compares to the standard of perfection and it's competition.

I know our community is capable of being welcoming, supportive and loving. I know we're capable of sharing what we know, and helping others. I know we're capable of focusing on what's important and not getting distracted by shiny gossip.

As we start Fall shows, be kind, be honest, be helpful. Sometimes it's as simple as making room or opening a carrier door for someone. Sometimes it's admitting you made a mistake. Sometimes it's helping someone new (or old) understand something they didn't. You don't have to be a "top breeder" to help this hobby grow and flourish.

Windfalls Decibel

One of "keepers" from this year. Windfalls Jazz on GC Windfalls Galileo. She's not perfect and has a lot of finishing to do but she'll show some before she joins the brood doe line-up.

Windfalls DogWash will be staying as a brood doe. Love her loin and that's something I tend to struggle with. Definitely a parts doe but excited to put her to use. She's also got exceptionally deep black color (despite being sunburnt). Her nails are jet black and despite being group housed for most of her life no white spots (and she's definitely had fur pulled). She's also the last GC Windfalls Dalmatian daughter.

Getting an earlier start on Fall breeding than I normally do...but the girls say it's time!

Windfalls Hippo x GC Windfalls Galileo
Windfalls Blacklist x MorningStar "Jimmy Choo"
Windfalls Kobold x Windfalls Fennec

They may or may not settle due to the heat causing temporary heat sterility in the bucks but if they don't no loss and if they do we get a jumpstart on things.

There are some changes coming to Windfall Farms. Primarily we are reducing numbers, and hopefully leaving more room for growouts. I also plan on being more active in posting on the farm page, the plan is at least weekly. It has been an exceedingly frustrating year for many reasons and on top of that I've been struggling to find balance. I'm too stubborn and love my breeds and rabbits too much to quit but change is necessary to regain the joy.

This doe is my keeper for the Palomino program. (Only keeping two does...and two bucks lol). Palomino's develop very differently from Rex or other breeds I have experience with, and I haven't produced or handled nearly as many so I feel less confident in my evaluation of them as JRs. This doe was actually on my cull pile but I hadn't gotten around to it and then by the time I had time I posed her again and really liked the direction she was going... I'm even more impressed now. Particularly impressed as she's been given no advantages, it's been hot and I don't baby them, and she's still group housed with some other prospect does.

Crappy late night pics...one of these days I'll have time and it won't be a billion degrees and I'll get nice daylight photos of the keepers lol.

Well we have hit a few speed bumps this year. Thankfully I'm ridiculously stubborn and an annoying optimist lol. TLDR- no live sales this spring.

We will not be offering any live rabbits for sale from the spring breeding season. I hope to feel comfortable selling again by Fall but we'll make that decision then. I had a respiratory issue pop up and I do not want to share it with any one else. We hope to be able to show but will not show until we have had 30 days with no symptoms. This has been really tough but it's an opportunity to cull hard for strong immune systems. It disproportionately affected my Palominos who are mostly very closely related so exposed a weakness I didn't know about.

And if that was not enough, I have a neighbor's dog issue. It will be resolved, but I've lost 8 rabbits so far. Most were food bound anyway but I absolutely did not want it to happen that way. The herd is handling it way better than I expected (probably better than I am to be honest). Rabbits that got loose from broken cages and were not eaten have just let me catch them, and everyone is still calm and easy going. Missing a few tails too, including on the best Lynx I've had born so far.

I adore my rabbits so this has been a tough bit but we'll get through it just fine and end up better on the other side. I'm happy to answer any questions so feel free to ask.

Pictured are some JRs that are *knock on wood* fine, that I'm excited for. (Windfalls Fennec, Windfalls Hippo Stomp, Windfalls Speakeasy, and currently unnamed)

I know yall want to hear my 11:30pm rambling in the rabbit barn lol. But I love litter eval videos and I know I'm not the only one, and there are some interesting parts to this litter. Mostly food but that's ok.

The buck in the collage is open to relocating for making meat babies, I wouldn't say he's show quality. But excellent growth!

Windfalls Poppy x AIR Gobi (Palomino's)

Poor girl had a rough delivery and we lost 6/8 of her kits due to a stuck kit BUT she's been a fantastic mom and these two DOES are pretty nice. They're almost 6 weeks. She's bred back for a repeat.

Last one for tonight, but this is just fun. 2.5 weeks vs nearly 7 weeks.

Got to look through the GC Windfalls Dalmatian x Somersets Sandman litter. They're a day shy of 7 weeks. I'll be growing out both Broken Castors further but the Broken Amber and the Castor didn't make the cut. Broken Amber is the weight leader, already at 4 lbs, Broken Castor Doe is in second at 3lbs 13 oz, the Broken Castor Buck is at 3lbs 4 oz and the Castor is only 3lbs. The doe definitely got the best parts from this cross, and this litter is a great example of how the quality can differ even from a good pairing.

Top left is the Broken Castor Doe (Windfalls Hippo Stomp). Top Right is the as yet unnamed Broken Castor Buck. I doubt he has enough loin to stick around but we'll see how he develops and I'll reevaluate at 10 weeks, if he makes it through that one I'll recheck at 16 weeks. If the Broken Amber buck on the bottom left had a few inches less shoulder he would be sticking around lol. I like his rear view better than the Broken Castor but that shoulder is a deal breaker. The Castor has been on my cull list since the first time I put hands on him. I do appreciate how short his shoulders are but he's a mess. Very narrow based, lacking in loin, light bone, etc.

We have chocolate based kits!! I expect they're Amber since I expect Sandman is AA but we'll see. And there may be a lilac based kit too, we'll see in a few days what's blue base and what's lilac base.

We experienced something bizarre yesterday. A double pregnancy, where a single dead kit was expelled 16 days late while the doe was 9 days bred with a litter she carried to term. Very very rare but very cool.
September 30th- Bred
November 1-Had milk, pulled fur but no kits
November 7th- Rebred
November 16th delivered single, huge decomposing kit with some fur on kit
December 7th delivered 1 on wire with no fur pulled
December 8th 5 live kits in the box with plenty of fur pulled

All 3 girls due tomorrow have something nest like started. Moon has the prettiest neat of the 3. No fur pulled yet but that's not unusual, most does pull right before/during/after delivery.

Windfalls Fridgidaire (Broken Blue) and Windfalls Jazz (Blue) are full sisters (if you can't tell) from Windfalls Mousepad and Hoppy Days Chicago. They're both Chocolate carriers.

Jazz is due in the next group with kits by Somersets Sandman(Castor) and Fridge is still a JR and holding off breeding until after the Thanksgiving show.

She's a molty mess and needs a touch more condition but I think I'm going to hold off on breeding Windfalls Mousepad and let her go to a show or few. She has a little more than a month before our Thanksgiving show so she should be looking great. She was born last year when we had no shows so never got a chance, but her daughters have shown well (including BOSV Blue at Nationals). I love Lilacs anyway and this girl is incredibly sweet and a wonderful mom.

Hi there! I was wondering if I could ask you a question about eye color? I tried to message you but it won't seem to work. 😊
I just dropped by to give your page a “like” from my personal and business page. I’m Countrified Hicks and enjoyed looking around your page. Also, I wanted to let you know that Tuesdays are my share day and would love for you to join in. Merry Christmas Eve.
Where are you located?
New "Like" from us - love your page!!
Thank you for another great day of service. I feel much
better now that everyone got their hooves trimmed.
Thank you for your patience while I vaccinated each one
while they we had them caught.
Thanks again for making my appointment for Friday on short notice. You did great job once again. One of the does you trimmed
that had badly overgrown hooves kidded the next day, yesterday on Saturday with 10.8 pound paint buck kid. Pictures posted on my page. Anyone reading this, she does a great job and I highly recommend her.
Its time to trim hooves again. I need an appointment.
there is much on here yet! i must be the first! haha
