My son loves these sweet jalapeño slices so I canned a batch. Start with firm jalapeño peppers and slice, discarding the stem. No deseeding or coring necessary! A bunch of the seeds end up in the sweet brine and I strained those out before pouring the hot syrup into the jars.

When things go as planned, Carrots grow a long tap root. But even still, nature has a sense of humor and throws in a few nuances just for fun. While sorting the harvest we entertained ourselves with some of the quirky carrots. The fun ones.

Potato digging is like treasure hunting in the cool loose soil, when they are pulled up by the potato plow first. Thank you to all who participated! Let Idaho grow what grows best in Idaho, Kennebec potatoes are a delicious thin-skinned golden heirloom potato particularly suitable for Maryland. Our CSA will be eating these for the next few months. No peeling required!

Planting happens throughout the season to keep the harvest flowing. We plant three sets of zucchini and cucumbers for a long harvest. Bok choy, lettuce, arugula are planted routinely in small batches. Kale lasts til august and then we plant again in early fall. August is a hard time to plant, when it’s dry and bugs are peak. 📸 Ray and maybe Sam too

House in the Woods Farm tomatoes for sale by the ten pound flat for pickup on the farm this weekend 7/17-19. We have a small window of time that we sell bulk tomatoes, so think quick. Onion harvest week! We grow these beauties from seed to harvest. They are drying, curing now so they keep well into the winter months. CSA is enjoying them fresh now too. Onions are not a crop I ever expected to love as a farm harvest item. How often we take for granted the essential bag of onions from the store? I sure did. Essential but not special. Not a crop I ever expected to love so much straight from the farm. But here we are.

The weekly CSA harvests of June were bountiful—beets, turnips, kale, arugula, bok Choi, lettuce, chard, collards, scallions, cabbages, cucumbers, zucchini. Dill, basil, Garlic scapes. Reach out if you want to jump in, there is so much more to come. Next up: adding garlic, onions, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes!

Garlic is harvested and drying! It air cures for a few weeks. If you are growing garlic, it’s harvest time! When the leaves are dying back by about 30% it’s time to pull one up and check. If it is split, you’re late. Check earlier next year. We pulled ours a few weeks ago. 📸 Samantha Neier
