What’s that?!? It’s Kohlrabi! Kohlrabi is a unique spring vegetable, an alien bulb with a thick purple or green skin. Peel and slice, best eaten raw with a sprinkle of sea salt. Add to salads or shred into cole slaw. Eat with ranch or hummus. It tastes like the stalk of a broccoli. Kohlrabi is often grown at CSA farms and otherwise hard to find in the United States. Garlic scapes! These loopy seed pods from the garlic plants are a delicious delicacy! They snap off and taste like fresh vibrant raw garlic. They can be chopped and used like chopped garlic in any dish sautéed or baked. Great blended in pesto instead of garlic. And on CSA pickup day I had a couple young helpers to fill my arm with scapes.

Food bank bound

First week of CSA, we harvested bok Choi, kale, lettuce, Napa cabbage, arugula, tatsoi, carrots, a little broccoli, early zucchini, Japanese salad turnips, green onions.

The Anne Arundel county Food Bank was very excited to get the vegetables. It was 106 lbs headed straight for the refrigerators.
