Hi welcome to Very Perry Ducks! Our names are Sarah and Jeff and we’ve been keeping ducks since 2022 when we settled in Missouri.

It was a dream for us come true to raise our own ducks! When we were newlyweds at college, we would often walk to the campus duck pond for dates, and while there, fell in love with these amazing birds! We spent the next 15 years learning and preparing while also starting our family and moving all over the country during Jeff’s previous military service.

I (Sarah) was born with a genetic disorder which has made me chronically ill since childhood, and raising ducks with my family brings me so much joy in the midst of constant struggle and heartache.

I started this page mostly as a place to put my personal duck pictures and videos (they really pile up!!), but also to let locals know when we have extra eggs or birds available. We love teaching people about these amazing birds and sharing our love for them!

I’m not always a consistent poster due to my illness, and I don’t do any fancy editing or vlogging, but I’m always grateful to see people enjoying our ducks. Thanks for checking us out!

Jeff’s angle of the same stuck duckling event—he’s trying to keep them calm in an already stressful situation. We try not to intervene with Mama Duck and her babies as much as possible. Afterward we did add rocks to the adult water troughs and the ducklings can easily hop out on their own now. Also there are specific smaller duckling waterers in our duck run and they have an entire pond—ducklings are just very curious and can easily get into trouble like this! Fortunately we keep a close eye on them and they were not stuck here long!

Mama Duck was not at ALL happy with us…two ducklings got stuck in the adult water trough and by the time Jeff started helping the second one she was NOT having it! She’s a good mama but 😱

Mama Duck + Fam Part 6: FINALE

Short video because this was right when Mama Duck rounded the corner of the fence, quite a bit ahead of the babies, and they panicked and dove through the fence—so the video cuts off because I knew Mama Duck would panic once she realized they weren’t right behind her anymore! So they got into the duck run ahead of her and I ran around the corner to finish getting Mama in through the gate where she could meet back up with her ducklings. Then we had to do quite a bit of work getting her and the babies into their separate accommodations from the rest of the ducks. While I was walking the ducks over, Jeff ran ahead with a pitchfork and moved her nest from the main duck house to the temporary nursery.

Then they would not go in, of course! We ended up having to scoop up the ducklings—who are quite easy to catch this young—and then Mama followed after that. And then quacked at us angrily after we closed them in. PHEW.

So today we left them in the run. No more pond adventures for a while! 😅

Mama Duck + Fam Part 5: you thought that was the end didn’t you?! Well after spending the day by the pond, Mama Duck and her babies got really cozy over there and didn’t want to come back to the run for dinner and to be locked up for the night! We’ve had signs of a fox nearby recently so we didn’t want to leave them out there overnight. So Jeff was shaking the feed bucket on one side of the pond trying to lure her over while the kids and I went around the other way to guide her from behind. I was sure we’d be there all evening walking circles around the pond but after this brief swim, they came out on the correct shore and I was able to get between Mama Duck and the pond so she wouldn’t dive back in.

Mama Duck + Fam Part 4: we made it to the pond! First swim for the ducklings! And Mama Duck’s first swim since she started brooding!
