It is a ‘pinch me’ moment…I had the utmost honor of being interviewed by MPR News on my two passions, honey bees and the Minnesota State Fair. The story was included in their State Fair coverage. I was thrilled to be considered and had an absolute blast talking about the Bee & Honey competition.

Andrea Setsvold of Afton, Minn., has been beekeeping since 2016. She loves the hobby, and now, she has another reason to love it: entering the work of her and her honeybees into the Minnesota State Fair.

3 days, 15 hours until the gates open for the one and only Minnesota State Fair, and I am ready for it!

While preparing my entries this year it felt different and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I had to push myself to find the energy and passion which usually comes natural for me. So, I am going into this year’s competition with the attitude to have fun and be in the moment. It’s less about the competition and ribbons and more about bonding and sharing in the joy with other fair enthusiast. On that note, I am so exciting that two of my friends will also be competing with their breathtaking photography (by Mike Joslin) and amazing charcoal drawing (by ).

A day in the life of a beekeeper:
Friday, 4/26: drive through two storms and get to hotel to shelter in place
Saturday, 4/27: Wake up, eat continental breakfast, help toddler remove “dinglehopper” coated with maple syrup from clean hair, get truck loaded up with bees, drive home, install 8 nucs and 6 packages across 4 yards, two stings.
Sunday, 4/28: drink a cup of coffee and now it’s time to clean up and regroup

I am excited to announce our 2023 honey is for sale.

This year was a big year for us. We were honored with the Blue Ribbon at the Minnesota State Fair for White Honey and Dark Natural Beeswax. We also won first place at the Washington County Fair for White Honey.
