Did you know that each batch of our strawberry ice cream contains 6 pounds of berries? After picking, we wash, slice and freeze them before combining with other ingredients in our machine. Then all that’s left is getting that perfect swirl!

Strawberries are an excellent source of Vitamin C. And when you pick them yourself under a sunny Afton sky, you get plenty of Vitamin D, too. We have six fields of strawberries with plenty of space to spread out for picking. Make plans to get to the farm early in the morning to beat the weekend crowds. We open at 8 AM.

The patches are loaded with ripe berries which makes for very easy picking. Here’s a quick and easy recipe for strawberry compote from The Spruce Eats that makes for a delicious biscuit spread or topping for ice cream. Or you could eat it straight from the jar.

Ingredients:
1 pound fresh strawberries
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 tablespoons orange juice, or water
Cornstarch, as needed, optional

Instructions:
1. Rinse the strawberries and hull the fruit.
2. Cut large berries into halves or quarters. Leave small berries whole.
3. Place the berries in a saucepan. Add the sugar and juice or water. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the strawberries are all soft and just starting to fall apart and the liquid thickens, between 5 to 10 minutes.
4. Taste, and add more sugar if necessary. The compote will thicken a little while it cools off, but if you think it's too thin, mix 1 tablespoon of water with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and add it to the saucepan. Stir well and remove from heat.
5. Let the compote cool off completely. Transfer to a clean pint jar and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

I have strawberries on the mind as spring is closer than I want to admit and our to-do list before opening the doors to strawberry pickers in April/May is far too long.

So, I need strawberry recipe ideas: Jams, jellies, sauces, cookies, or any other baked items.

It's going to be a special season!

(If you have recipes for cherries, peaches, blackberries or apples... send those too).

Perfect Fall morning on the farm!

We are only two weekends away from closing for the season. Saturday, October 31st will be our last day.

We will end the season with pumpkin and strawberry ice cream, and hope you will come grab a frozen pint.

As we approach winter, we want to take a few minutes to thank the other companies that we cooperated with this season, the list can be very long, but here are just a few:
Aaron's Creek Nurseries - our plants
Valley Produce Supply - lots of supplies
Shenandoah Valley Produce Market - Local Produce
Jerry Hatter - Honey
Blue Jay Farms - Herbs
McCutcheon's - Jellies, Jams, Preserves, and Pickles
Drumheller Orchards - Peaches and Apples
Galliker's - Ice cream mix
Rebel's Run - Cookies

In the spring, the hope it so have many more local companies join us in having their produce and products available at Critzer's.

10/13/2020

Currently on the farm:
* Pre-picked pumpkins for pies and carving
* Apples from Drumheller orchard
* Local vegetables: Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, zucchini, squash, onions and peppers.

For our u-pick families, strawberry season starts in April. For us, our strawberry season starts in August.

We have prepared the patches, put in the plastic rows, received our 111,000 plants last week, and over the past 4 days planted them all. My favorite sight: overhead irrigation that creates rainbows all across the fields.

Now we will tend to them through the winter and be ready for all of you to join us in the spring.

I had fun today at Critzer Family Farm! I met some new friends and drove a John Deere. #cookiepthedog #farm #pumpkinpatch2020
Tuesday will be a trip to visit our second farm for the week. We are starting a new agenda of seeing what's out there. We went to Chiles today and had so much fun. Brett actually wanted to walk around, he did not have enough energy so tomorrow we are going to try Critzer's and ride into the mountains for a while.
We took the kids strawberry picking at the farm today. They absolutely loved it! It was a wonderful experience all around. Super friendly staff, the patches were easy to navigate for picking, and it was great family atmosphere. We will be back!
Thanks for the amazing ice cream and fun!
Will you be open on Saturday 5/23?
My lunch today, showcasing the delicious sweet strawberries of Critzer Family Farm, along with other fresh produce from yesterday’s Greene County VA farmers market. There’s nothing more satisfying than warm sunshine, rows and rows of gorgeous strawberries, and the wonderful owners of a farm so willing to allow their bounty to be shared with hungry, eager patrons! I love country living, farms, and farmers!
Are you open tomorrow?
This is the best strawberry Ice Cream on this Mountain.
